"You can get anything you need at the big mall all americian products and more at over inflated prices"

Where is this mall located? I haven't found anything that even vaguely resembles a mall.

Honestly I will have to ask where it is exactly, but I am sure if you ask where the families go to take their children to play arcade games on the top floor of the NEW shopping building they will tell you. It is about 5 levels high and is the only one in benghazi as far as I know. Fairly new actually. Each floor is dedicated to grocery store and food, childrens goods, womens goods, housing wares, mens goods,etc.. and at the top is the arcade a nice cafe and above that is a pizza place.Sorry I could not tell you where or how to get there at this time as it was my first time there I had a lot to take in and remembering the names of streets was not one thing I was good at LOL.

Izzy01 - Ask the your driver to take you to the supermarket near the Egyptian market. It's behind a really huge and beautiful mosque (a new one, I think) and is much taller than any of the buildings around it. I think it has red cladding. But everyone knows the Egyptian market, near the airport road so someone will be able to tell you where it is. In my opinion it's not loaded with branded European branded stuff, but there is plenty of choice and it was definitely my favourite place to shop when I lived in Benghazi.

Hi to LittleSpoon (and all others)
I'll be arriving in BG from the US in a few weeks. I guess you have been there for a bit now so you can clue me in on how to keep myself entertained.  I have been to Benghazi once before but it was such a whirl-wind trip that I really had no idea of how it would be to live there.  I'm a bit worried about fitting into the expat community because it seems like most of you are married with families.  I would love to make friends before I arrive to ease the transition.  Did you say you were stuyding for your degree.... at Garyounis????? In English?  What faculty?  I just finished my masters and am not sure if I feel like starting another degree... but it would be nice to know that I could.  I have a Libyan phone number from when I was there before (about a year ago) - I wonder if it is still good?Feel free to email me and I'll give you the number - or you can give me yours and I'll call when I get there.

@GISGirl

I have actually left Benghazi now (will be in Moscow in a few weeks). The expat community that I encountered in Benghazi was small but appears to have grown recently. Not everyone is married with children, so panic not.

Life in Benghazi takes a lot of getting used to, but I found it a lot easier when I started to make friends so keep that on your agenda.

I lived in Garyounis (it's an area, as well as a university) and was distance learning with a UK university so I couldn't tell you anything about the uni in Benghazi.

Do you mind me asking why you are moving? Life as a single female in Benghazi is tough so I recommend setting up some support before you arrive if you are travelling alone. I can suggest contacting 'Wend' and 'Wildcats' from here as they are both lovely ladies who know a thing or two about the city.

Good Luck, it's quite the adventure!
