Urban gardening in Malta

Post new topic

Hi,

I am just wondering if there is an urban gardening\community garden movement in Malta.

I have in my mind something similar

Hi Evi,

you must be joking ?

Malta is a dry, rocky island. Hardly anything grows in gardens except cacti, bananas and orange trees plus here and there olive trees.

What exactly are you looking for?

Cheers

Hi Ricky

yes, I am aware of  the climate of Malta:).  If you have looked at the pictures you could see that some of the urban gardens are done in empty plots and in containers or big sacks. It is more about community, teaching city kids about plants and seasons, etc than growing your food.I am sure that the summer heat is a problem, but  people grew things even in Malta before they exported everything from Italy.
The urban garden we participated in in Prague did concerts, table tennis tournaments, had sand pit and toys for children and of course being in Czech Republic beer on tap.

Never heard anything about this pevi but the idea and the photos are lovely, thanks for sharing :)

Hi Evi,

maybe you want to get in contact with the Manikata Cooperative:

http://www.manikatafarmers.com/

Or if you are aiming at school kids you should contact the Ministry of Education or individual schools.

It is not just an issue of climate! Sadly most newly planted trees and plants are destroyed or stolen within days in Malta. There is a lot to be done but bring patience with you.

Hi Evi,

and I did look at your pictures before I replied !

But sadly I did not see anything that would able to be replicated in Malta!
