can an american with a resident visa work at a part time job say hair dresser?

eddstaton

Of course. Why wouldn't you be able to?

When I was in Guatemala years ago, foreigners couldn't be hired as employees except under very narrow condidtions.

My understanding is you cannot work in Ecuador with only a resident visa.

amyf

Yes, you can work. I was able to work here legally with just a 6 month visa (and a RUC, a number and account with the IRS). I now have a Residency Visa and am able to work as well.

But, What kind of Resident Visa?

As far as I know if you have a Retire Visa, you can't work, you're retire and living from your pension.

With the other kind of Visas maybe you can work.

Thanks for your insight on jobs.

you were the only one to say we could get a job on a resident visa. are you speaking from experience?

OceanHideaway

As a pensioner you cannot -- as a resident under other types of visas you may be able to.  You will be required to have an Ecuador tax id number (a RUC) as mentioned and sign into the beneficios program of IESS.

Ecuador has become more and more strict about 'under the table' type workers in the recent past -- and it is best to work above board --

The same applies to hiring workers -- your maid, guardiano, handy man, etc.

Thanks susan. My wife and i will look you up when we get to Ecuador. You sound like a kick!

Absolutely, you can work with a permanent resident visa! many foreigners are legally working with their cedulas (Ecuadorian IDs) which are granted upon approval of their permanent status. Good luck!

What about paying taxes?  Is an expat living on a pension and maybe a little side work required to pay taxes in the US?

Yes, and file the annual FBAR if you have more than $10K in foreign accounts and FACTA Form 8938 if you have more than $50K in foreign accounts. EEUU is one of 2 countries in the world that tax foreign earnings. Es lo que es.

"EEUU is one of 2 countries in the world that tax foreign earnings. Es lo que es"
That is true. Another country is the UK.

I was not clear. The EEUU is one of 2 countries in the world that tax foreign earnings of non-resident citizens. Eritrea is the other one (East Coast of Africa).

Thank you !  Now I wonder if an American citizen is required to pay his US taxes also?

I responded earlier in the thread. An American citizen will never escape the IRS. Even if you have no income other than retirement, investments, whatever, you are required to file and pay. Or, conversely, if you have no US based income period, but receive investment income outside the country (EEUU), you will still owe taxes on that to the IRS.
