Hello!
My husband has a chance to move to Cairo so I would like to know if you could help me with some questions:

a)how safe/unsafe is living in cairo this days? and for women?
b)Maadi and Zamelek have been affected by demostration?
c)it is safe to walk around, go to restaurantes, etc?

Thanks a lot and best regards!

Hi S,

Most of the Cairo is Safe, Except the places which has demonstrations like Nasr City and Giza, but you may know that demonstrations can appear in any spot anytime, no rules.

Maadi and Zamalek is not affected right now by demonstrations, although Maadi is better from my point of view, as Zamalek is closer to Tahrir Square which is the core of demonstrations.

Also you may consider New Cairo it is a nice spot and very safe.

Considering Safety, We are moving all the time, once we are away of the demonstrations spots we are ok and do not face any problems.

Although you should take care, some criminals may consider the situation in the country as an opportunity to do whatever they want. because they know that the police is busy. once you take certain precautions they will not be able to harm you.

Please feel free to ask any questions

We are looking to see you in Egypt

Best Regards

Yes they did - some are back - not sure if all are back.

The warnings frommost countries foriegn offie are not to travel to EGypt unless an absolute necessity.

Personly until all this situation in Egypt is resolved and the situation is more stable I would not come to live here!
ALot more expats have left again, either by choice or their companies have moved them.

As for being safe - it is difficult for someone who is EGyptian to tel you whether or not it is safe - as they have different experiences and expectations.
My opnion right now - is that no it is not totally safe and won't be for some time.  I know many expats who have stayed in their houses over the last month and are being really careful about when they go out and where - ie. not at night.
One expat reported how her Husbands company is on the highest alert status right now - and the next level up is emergency evacuation from a military airfield!!!
So you can make your own deductions from that.

For women in particularly - the harrassment is at an all tim high here in Egypt - yu have to grow a pretty thick skin to put up with some of it without retaliating.  It has put me off going some places that 10 years ago wouldn't have bothered me one little bit.
The rude and derogatory verbals are brazen, as are the gestures!

Hi Biffy!

thanks a lot!

so your advice would be to avoid egypt if it possible, if I am wright?

in general, expats you know or have read in forums are feeling worried by the time or they can live their lifes more or less as usual? I mean, people are moving or they just stay at home as much as possible. do you/they feel worry even at home?

thanks a lot!!

aymanr

Biff, you are very conservative.

I agree the situations is not that stable, but we did not face any problems away from the demonstration places.

Please do not follow the rumors. if you face something by yourself please tell us.

I am sending this while I am sitting in a Café shop in Mokattam city, it is 12:26 AM and I'll head home in New Cairo after maybe an hour.

I have allot of foreigners living around me and they are living their normal daily life.

Yes it is up to you, but our experience is exactly like yours we do not have anything more, May I ask a question for Biff, why you still here? :) cheers

Please if you have any exact bad experience please tell us, if it is only rumors, I am sorry you should not believe it.

Please ask any question I am willing to make the picture clear.
