You can use Skype on your laptop if you run VPN (Virtual Private Network) software.  I'm positive that this has been discussed before on this forum, so you might want to do a search in the forum.  If you can't find the information you need, PM me and I'll try to help.

Received notification from the Belize Tourism Board that I been accepted in to the "QRP". Six weeks from submission of application to acceptance. Did all of he paperwork myself (not difficult at all).

Thanks!  We are having fun visiting relatives, but the weather has been very chilly (far below normal in the east), so we are missing a few things about Belize.  :D

Still enjoying your blog and watching your build come along (virtually)!

I finally made the mover under the QRP program. It was wonderful to get moved in and settled. QRP worked well for me as I brought down most of my stuff and a new vehicle.
Below is costs. BZE dollars unless noted.
QRP Application/mail/program fee/ID card = 1400 US
Customs broker (Harry Bradley was outstanding) Car 200, Household Goods (HHG) 300
HHG- Hyde shipping from Ft Lauderdale - container load (about 8 pallets) 1350 US
Customs: tax on container 137, agriculture 116, 3 guys to unload/reload container for inspection 50 US
Truck for container delivery to Corozal area 583
Vehicle Hyde from Ft Lauderdale 660US
Customs tax 56, temp registration 10, 1 year registration 135, 1 year insurance 1235 (which was very expensive) The tax/duty I saved on a new 20kUS vehicle was 15k US.
Electric deposit 100, new service 40

Caridust- thank you so much for this VERY helpful info. We have been working on getting estimates and deciding about the QRP program. This post was  helpful beyond words.
Do you mind clarifying? The duty on a $20,000 vehicle is 75% if we don't use the QRP?

Caridust

Yes. Its duty and GST (tax) togather based on the value of the vehicle. The cheapest duty is on pick up trucks, For me it was QRP or buy old 4 cyl pickup (cheapest) and I didn't want an old truck.

belize

I have a broker in the Placencia area.  He told me the duty is not only on the cost of the vehicle.  If you look on the Belize gov't website they quote percentages on 4, 6 & 8 cylinder vehicles.  I have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler.  I was told the duty would be 79% plus GST because my Jeep is considered an SUV.  That is a whole different category.  QRP is the only way to go if you don't want to end up paying double for your vehicle.

Caridust

Mine is a 2013 jeep wrangler 6 cyl value 44,000 bz. Total I saved was approx 30,000 BZ, however they calculated it.

belize

Caridust...Ridiculous isn't it...to pay almost double the value of your vehicle??  I was quoted about the same for my 2009 Wrangler.  I paid almost the same as you paid for your 2013 Wrangler.  I bought it used.  In Toronto, Canada a 2013 Wrangler starts at $34,000.  Our money is almost par so it would not be much less in U.S. dollars.
Thank you for the info on the QRP.  I am in the process...just waiting to do my medical.  I will be using a different shipping co from Mobile, Alabama because I will be coming into port at Big Creek near Placencia...closer than Belize City.
May I ask what the $116 agriculture fee was for?

Caridust

Don't really know what all the fees were for.  Maybe they inspect for unwanted guests (bugs). guess it also keeps people employed. Frankly I relied on my broker to make top know where to go, who to pay and how much.  Overall going QRP was a good experience and worked well. Good luck with yours.

Not for our Mexican friends. Over 15 million of them just walk across the border and begin their new life gratis the American taxpayer.
