Moving and Marriage?

Post new topic

rolpaha

My girlfriend lives in Johannesburg and i live in Washington, D.C.  We have been dating for about 5 years and she wants me to come and live with her in the RSA.  I have very little money left due to a divorce and would probably be landing with about $30,000 USD and a monthly Social Security (Pensioner's) stipend of approximately $1,200 USD that will last until my death.

We have not discussed marriage, but that is a possibility.  The other possibility would be a life partner arrangement.  We are both 62 years of age as of this writing and in good health.

My main question is:

1) Do I qualify for ANY sort of health benefits in South Africa, since I would have NONE upon my arrival?  Will I need to marry or have a life partner agreement with this person before I would be eligible?  She is financially independent and I would pretty much be living with her as my provider for most all things.

There may be other questions to follow.

Thanks.

Hi Rolpaha ... in terms of health benefits, I think your best bet is likely to be State healthcare. The fees are far cheaper than private doctors and hospitals, and are based on how much you earn: if you're likely to need regular treatment, you'll need to register with the hospital and give proof of your income. You can get an idea of what you're in for here, as well as reading more about the hospital: http://www.johannesburghospital.org.za/fees.html

In terms of specialised medication, you're unlikely to get any of that from State care: State hospitals do dispense some medication, but you might be out of luck depending on the rarity of what you need. Buying medication privately isn't cheap: the more exotic antibiotics cost hundreds of rand easily.

Many thanks.  This is of a great help...I think.  I'll be back later for additional information if you don't mind trying to answer.
