My hubby and I are seriously considering a move to Ecuador. (We are not of retirement age yet, and would have to liquidate all of our assets inorder to make that move. Which won't be a large amount by today's standards.)
Can an average person live there until they retire and perhaps supplement their income with a B&B or hostel of some sort to generate a small income - or is this a pipe dream?
From what I've read- (I do not wish to offend anyone) - but it sounds like only if you have healthy bank accounts or are a white collar worker of some sort, that is the only way to go.
All we are doing is looking for a fresh start and new adventure. Will we survive?

We are in the process of learning spanish and plan to take a trip to ecuador sometime this year.

Yes it can be done.

It takes planning and an investment to tide you over the learning curve and low times. Business either works the way you originally planned (rarely) or you metamorphose into a new business, until you become "successful" to whatever means you require.

But keep in mind what you can do, and most enjoy doing. Chances are if you like Ecuador there is something you can apply your personal "skill set" to. Keep your eyes open to opportunities, it's where our American -- make that North American -- ingenuity comes to it's best use. It is possible, given the right outlook, flexibility and tenacity to be doing something both enriching and enjoyable or as long as you desire.

When you come south, and want to stay on the coast for a bit, think about staying with is here at the Ocean Hideaway. I'd be happy to share my experiences so far, living her for over a year and a half now. And there is another innkeeper in the mountains near Otovalo who has many more years experience than i who would be happy to share stories with you. She can be found posting on another website and i will forward the info to contact her. After 30 years she is ready to move the inn to new hands as well.

Thank you. You were very helpful.
We are planning to be on the coast during our trip,and have been extensively looking at the coastal areas on-line. Salinas and area has been a big draw so far, but we are going with an open mind to all areas and are going to check out as much as possible while we are there.
