I was just wondering about everything I've read about barking dogs being a problem, is true? If so is there an area in Costa Rica that this isn't a problem?

Barking dogs are a problem wherever you are (we had a problem w/ our neighbor's dog in California). However, you can find circumstances that aren't bad, and have some hope. For example, our apartment complex (8 units) does not allow pets, so it is not a nearby issue for us.  Also, the dogs up the street no longer bark at me, since they now know me - I walk past them nearly every day.  The do bark if I am with someone new :).

Once again, thanks for your input. We have lived out in the country here in good old Indiana most of our lives and would like to find a long term rental in the country in CR. I have been doing research for about six months now and have come to the conclusion that we are just going to have to come down and check things out for ourselves or take one of George Lundquist tours. I know we need to join the ARCR and they can answer a lot of questions but just not at the point to shell out the cash for that yet. I think at this point we may opt for six months in CR and six in the States. Becoming a resident of CR sounds appealing especially for health insurance. As a General Motors retiree I have already lost my eye and dental insurance and who knows what I'll loose next, also my pension is not guaranteed for life, it's renegotiated every four years so I don't know how that would work out for residency requirements, I'm only 57 so it will be a while before I'm on S.S. that is guaranteed for life.
Thank you

The best kept dogs in Costa Rica are in the wealthy cities such as Santa Ana, Escazu,Cariari or other residential areas. The more of a small town feel the more free range dogs you will see. However, the cost of living is also lower in the small towns. Hey, Dogs could be a great small community project.:)
Don’t waste your money paying for advise unless it’s legal advice. Come down and live in different places until you guys find your ideal place. Start with the most unlikely location and move on to your ideal location last.

One of the many reasons I love Costa Rica is because it is a dog country. There was a recent dog census conducted here and the results say there are 1 million dogs - that is 1 dog per every 5 people. That is a lot of dogs. You can't go anywhere without running into a dog or 10.
They aren't all barking like in 101 Dalmatians, though. This is Costa Rica - they are mostly laid back dogs :)
