Hi,

Getting ready to move to Spain for a job in Gib in a couple of weeks. I have looked everywhere for the answer to one question

Are transfers between a Gib account & a UK account free?

:)

Thanks,
Fatty

hi,

I phoned the Gib Lloyds a couple of weeks ago, they said you can't open a Gib A/C until you are resident there, but you can continue to use use UK A/Cs in Gib with no charges for cashpoints etc... Gib A/C checks anyway are cleared in the UK... hope this may help! As for charges, if you open a Gib A/C in same bank as your old UK one, its just a transfer between A/Cs, Gib remember is an "overseas part of the UK" ... It doesn't behave this way in reality, eg residence, health care, welfare benefits, defence costs....but where it suits them, it does....

Thanks Nick,

That's pretty helpful actually so I will make sure I open a UK account that has a presence in Gib before I leave :)

Would you recommend one in particular? Are lloyds okay?

Cheers

From LLoyds website:-
Our regional offices are there to help you set up new accounts, mortgages and savings products. Because they are not transactional banking offices, they are not equipped to offer counter service or help you manage an existing account - you can do all of this 24 hours a day using Offshore Phonebank:

UK Banks are Natwest and Barclays, Barclays are under a 3 months review they may or may not be staying.

Other banks see:-

Then there are the three Building Societies:-

At present I am thinking of moving all my banking to the Norwich and Peterbourough

Thanks for that Grumpy

I will take this into consideration before I open an account over in UK, so I can find one that will be open in both Countries.

thanks again :)

Hi Both,

Grumpy lives there so he knows the score better than I! All I know is from a phone call to Lloyds in Main St, Gib town, but yes there is a Lloyds there... Be careful if Lloyds point you to their off shore accounts run out of the Isle of Man, there seems to be a 1.5% fee for cash withdrawals in their  off shore accounts, these are not the same as an A/C in Lloyds in Main St, Gib, for residents only. Obviously there is some sensitivity with the banks about queries from overseas residents for A/Cs in Gib, they've probably been ticked off for helping people to avoid tax! What are your views Grumpy?

Nick.

Don't bother with Lloyds unless you have mega bucks.  I think when I asked it was 250 grand to open an account, they don't do current.

Jyske is similar.

Barclays is business as usual, but it isn't easy to get an account with them either.  We know someone who has been here 30 years and never got one.

Which leaves NatWest.

As for tax, for Gib residents there is none.
