It is worth having a reasonable range of casual clothes your happy to be seen in as when you visit compounds or go to social events the abaya's come off.

Strangely, when a Saudi women removes the veil, it totally changes her face and you don't recognize her despite having seen her eyes for maybe months!

i thought we had a new colleague when she removed her veil..lol.

Allie, thanks for posting our very sexy photo ;)

Allie,
I'm so glad you had your "Girl's Night".  I LOVED the abaya picture.  But surely you were terribly upset when ALL the other women wore the exact same thing you wore?! I mean, what are the odds? It's just so weird...

Oh, do I understand correctly that if we buy clothes in KSA, we cannot try them on until we get home,  OR is it only lingerie  that has to be purchased before wearing? (Love that males are the sales people. I mean, the country is so concerned about contact between the sexes, and then they have men only selling lingerie to women. (Or males driving their women around, and often unrelated foreign men at that...)

Second, my husband's company (American owned/run) says it will handle the visas & tell us what & when to do something, but does that still mean a crazy long waiting period?

And last, if you are not Muslim, what do you do when you are outside the compound at prayer time?

Thanks and I look forward to meeting you all in real life.

Alethe

Visas can be very painful.  The process isn't very standard, every application seems to navigate a slightly different path.

It really comes down to how well connected the person from your organisation who handles the visa processing is.

Alethe

Outside compounds at prayer times, YOU WAIT.

There are a some restaurants & larger stores (eg supermarkets) that will allow you to stay inside while they are locked up for prayers.

Very quickly you adapt to planning your entire schedule about when prayer times are.

Raylarch:nonz - nice to know about the return policy - would this also apply to the items bought in department stores. Items such as electronics / housewares / bedroom accessories????? thanks

yes it does :)

Yes,u have to pay the price of it but u dont have to take home,u may try in mall changing room and return if u dont like and yeah i agree about this lingerie part :(

and yeah ,Alethe is right about the prayers time.

Musicman:hey, hey, how can i target anyone without even getting a birds eye view of their horizons

Wallahyeeee

spitfire8

outside compound at prayer time I "wait"...okay I get it if I can  be inside somewhere like a store- and then simply stop shopping while the owners pray??

But if I'm outside in public, do I stand there like we did on base when our flag is raised, "at attention"? I can do that, but is that what you mean?

Also I see that most would plan their days around prayers but it's very fragmenting & I'm often late (I'll work on that, won't I?) and wondered what the most respectful thing to do is, in that situation.
Thanks!

never ever think of standing at the open during these hours. Mostly the complete time of the prayer is about half an hour.
The most respectful and sensible things to do during this time is to wait inside; a mall, house, or maybe a car

shahab.ali

actually the most respectful thing to do is...PRAY ALONG!

Alliecat

she's not Muslim, shababy.

Alliecat

i thought we had a new colleague when she removed her veil..lol.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Spitfire,u r thinking to much..your life management will be use to according to it and no u dont have to stand still ..lol

and shabby,Plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and u know what i mean,right?

Alethe

You'll find that your not alone waiting inside closed malls.  There are very limited prayer facilities for Muslim women in Saudi, so like us they are normally to be found waiting out the prayer times, in the least unpleasant spot they can locate.

Alliecat
