Hi Everyone

I have the chance to join a company in Malta and move my family out to the Island. Obviously the Climate and location appeal a lot but wanted to get some info from the forum

I have just started researching the in and outs and wanted to ask the people who have done it what they would say the major Pro's and Con's are?

I think the role has a competitive salary so think we'd be ok financially but would like to hear your thoughts on things such as locations, intergrating into the community and anything else I should be checking out prior to a move:D

Have people found State schools ok or does it need to be private?

How often do Expats met up for a coffee or a beer as we won't know anyone out there?

oh yes and most importantly can you get the F1, the NFL and British Football coverage out there???

Hi Swifty,

I'll chime in!

Schools - I think the majority of expats with school-age children opt for the Private schools (that's not a scientific poll, just opinion gathered from conversations and expat forums, so it may be wrong). In our case, when we had to make a choice we had information that appears now to be wrong - we were under the impression that State Schools only taught in the Maltese language and so our kids would have been at a disadvantage. However, Mari on this forum has practical experience that proves otherwise and we are re-considering Public School for our kids for the next school year. So, I would advise you to do as much research as you can, decide what's important to you (location, class sizes, fees etc - everyone weights them differently) and make the best choice for you that you can at the time.

There are weekly expat meetups though this forum (see separate thread). There are other expat forums too, and facebook etc etc - probably never been an easier time to move somewhere new and make instance contacts. But, I would also recommend you to not stick exclusively to the expat community - the Maltese friends we made since moving here have been very welcoming and a great source of help and information.

British Football is very widely available on TV (with subscription) or in many, many bars. There are loads of ManU/Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea fans here and even one West Ham fan! F1 is shown in in some British-oriented pubs (maybe more) and may be available on TV (I simply don't know as I currently don't subscribe to any Malta TV package). NFL I don't know about either. However, with a good broadband internet connection you may be able to watch any of the those pretty easily....there are plenty of options these days. Send me a PM for more details!
