Hi all,
Just to inform you, that the new government have changed the dates for Childrens Allowence....
It always came first week of October, after the kids went back to school and the next payment being the first week of January.
Good news, they have realised that this is silly and moved the October payment to today and the January payment will be issued BEFORE Christmas.
I'm liking this new government
Caroline
That's correct Caroline! I also have applied for my son's child allowance back in June and when contacted their offices about couple of weeks ago, the lady who I spoke with told me that if everything was ok with my application, I should receive the payment sometime in October.
Just a question btw, is it mandatory to have the Maltese ID cards or residency doc to be entitled to this benefit? I am asking this coz they have send me a letter recently asking for a copy of our ID cards. I replied to them via email saying that I was still waiting for our IDs to be processed and they then asked for a copy of our passports. Just wonder if they will still proceed with our children allowance benefit. Me and my wife have be paying our Social Security contributions since June anyway.
Cheerio,
Antonio
Are you receiving Children's Allowance at a minimum of 450.00 per child per annum? / Eligibility and application forms.
If you are eligible for Children's Allowance, but not receiving it, you should claim it - retroactively - without delay.

Hi Mantonas,
I was told once, that it is the child's right to have the benifit and residency has nothing to do with it...As in, I still got mine although I was not registered as a resident, however, I did have my ID cards. This was all established for me 3-4 years ago and to be honest, they were the only department that seemed to be up on the EU law and the child's right.
I hope this helps but keep chasing them. You can call free on 159 and it is my experience that their computers/records are more up to date than the local office?
Good luck
Caroline
PS, don't forget it will all be backdated to the day you started the claim! check your bank account today!

Hi Byron49,
I am not sure yet how much it will be as this was my 1st time applying for it. I have filled in all the application forms back in June when I applied for it and I was told that due to the fact that my application was made at that time, the next payment would be in October.

I hope you're right Caroline! They also told me that the payment would be backdated from the time I have applied. I have checked by bank account just now and no luck yet Will wait for another week or 2 and will get in touch with them again.
Many thanks
Antonio
Just an update to say that I have received and email from the Assistant Principal - Children's Allowance Section informing that "at present the application is being processed for payment". So, hopefully we should get it soon
Cheerio!
Children's allowance to be given in mid-December - Changes made to families who originally received the allowance once a year.
Family Minister Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca announced that families that receive Childrens Allowance once a year would now be receiving this benefit every three months.
The change will see families receive the upcoming benefit in mid-December instead of the first week of January. This was intended to financially support the families in this festive season.
Every family with children under-16 will now receive their payments in December, March, June and September.
In a statement, the ministry said that around 40,000 families will benefit from the changes made.

yeah, you're right! That's the positive side of if.
I applied for child allowance back in June and have still not heard anything and no money in bank account, so guess I will have to chase that up.
I would say so Sparkie. An if it helps, this is the person's email address from the Child Benefit office that has been in contact with me about my application: luigia-anna.micallef@gov.mt
Good luck!
Antonio
Thanks Antonio, will get on to it next week! I will send an email and see what comes back, don't mind if it's not sorted as long as I know it's in hand and not lost!
Sparkie,
I have always found the department very efficient, they can be slow but always pay if you are owed. I was backdated nearly 2 years worth once!
Also,as well as emailing, call the free phone number 159. Their computers are up to date and the staff are (usually) helpful.

I have just received a letter from Social Security, asking me for a copy of our boarding passes confirming date of arrival here in Malta 2 years ago. I don't have these and have deleted the online confirmations so can't send these, but I'm confused why they are asking for these. Also they have asked me for official documents confirming my income for the 6 months before I registered as self employed, basically I was living on savings, but how do I prove this as I transferred money in to an pre paid credit card from my uk bank account.
Finally they have sent me another form in Maltese that I should sign apparently! but I will have to try to translate what it is before I sign anything.
I have emailed them back but will have to call them tomorrow because the letter states that I have to send all the documents back within 15 days, but by the date on the letter and the date on the envelope, the letter has sat somewhere for over a week!
I've never heard of a tourist receiving childrens allowance in Malta so it is linked to residency in Malta! In fact you have to been resident for more than 3 months in Malta before you can apply.
For more details see here:

There are also income limits too.
Beware of income and tax issues with any declarations that you make.
Cheers
Ricky
Quick question: Did any of you parents who applied for the Children's Benefit have received your December's payment?
Yes, we received our.
Thanks Spiridonov & Sparkie for both replies.
I am in the same boat as you Sparkie. I keep sending emails to them, making phone calls and the answer its always the same, everything is okay with our application but it just needs to be approved for payment. I have received an email on the 21st of November stating "The payment should be issued within the next 3 weeks in your bank account number provided." and when I called a few days ago, nothing has been approved yet.
I don't mind waiting for as long as it takes for the things to be sorted out but I just don't people to say it will be on this date and nothing happens. But anyway, fingers crossed and I hope to be sorted soon.
I actually phoned them today and was asked to resend my email from nearly 2 months ago, but after I re sent it I go an email acknowledging it and saying it was sent to the right department.
I had also had to sign a declaration about my children living with me and not receiving any money from their dad which I posted at the start of November along with a written copy of my email, so I'm slightly worried that has gone AWOL too.
I will let Christmas and new year happen then get back on to them in the new year when I haven't heard from them again, lol.

I actually received a similar email yesterday stating "I will be referring your email to the persons who have your case.". In my case, I also provided a doc stating that my son was not getting any Child Support from Portugal when I 1st applied, too. But I reckon you're right, it may be better waiting for the end of this festive season and get back to them
Thanks again for the input.
Cheerio,
Antonio
Antonio, if it's your first time to receive allowances - yes, it's typical. It takes a looooot of time to approve.
After that it's just automatic renewal, that's why we've already received it.

Thanks for the heads up Spiridonov!
once they approve do you get paid from the date that you submited the papers or from the date it's approved?
going to submit mine papers tomorrow, income papers for 2012 are not in english, so let's see how it goes
Yeah, that's what they told me Duxx. Called them recently and some lady said it just needs to be approved for payment and hopefully, should be done shortly.
Good luck to you
Our allowances were paid for 1.5 year back at the first time, so yes - you can hope on some extra with the first payment
That's good to know, I seem to be in almost daily contact with them at the moment getting even more extra paperwork for them, hopefully in the home straight now though.
Actually, I have sent them an email yesterday in regards to a different issue, and I just received a confirmation via email too that my payment has been approved and that I should get it next week.
To be honest, I am very impressed with their customer services, they seem very efficient.
Happy days!
