Nonz: Even in my country western embassies and compounds has such severe security. Well, I am not blaming u but that's the common practice in most part of world and i m sure, u know the reasons more than me.smile

No offence but i always find u quite bitter when we dicuss "Life in Saudi"

I think it was CAF who pointed out that in our countries, we don't have, nor need such security for foreigners.  Naturally, each country's embassy or consul has much more security than a normal office building might.

I've lived in 9 countries.  Only in the Arab countries that I've lived in do we have this kind of security, though I understand it's also common in many African and South American locations.  I've never been there, so can't speak from firsthand knowledge.

I don't understand why you think I'm bitter, Nonz.  I am just making an observation.  And the approach to all the foreigners' compounds near me have security, not just the "white faces".

I have spent the last year working with Saudi security and military forces, not sitting at home.  I hear about security, terrorists and threats more often, I'm sure.  Perhaps that is why I am much more cautious and a bit more pessimistic than you seem to be.

To each his own.

I'll err on the side of safety, thank you.

Have just read through all of your posts and am grateful for the information on the incident and glad that AllieCat chose to share it.  We all have to take things with a controlled and realistic view as crime happens all over the world and there are hot spots and spontaneous crimes everywhere.  I have travelled and lived in African states, USA, Caribbean, Europe and have seen and been a victim of crime a view times.  Has it prevented me doing what I do - NO. Would it stop me from taking Expat assignments - NO, would it stop me from travelling - NO.  However, the information posted for all to be aware of is of the most use as then at least we are informed and we should always assume we may be in a situation of trouble with no help - that would help us think more about what we do, how we do it and our attitude.  Thanks for the info - all - much appreciated. The only crime I was a witness to in Riyadh was way back in the 80's when I had to pass by one of my wifes friends homes to hand over a package on afternoon on my way home for lunch.

When I rang the doorbell, to my amazement, I found that the apartment had been broken in by a thief through one of the AC ducts which he had managed to push open. The lady in the house was screaming blue murder. The thief managed to get away through the front door. I saw him, face to face, and also was able to identify the make and color of the vehicle that he drove away in and was able to give the local cops a good description of him and the vehicle. They nabbed him on the road within an hour. Never felt better in my life.
