long term car lease

Post new topic

Hiya,

does anyone lease a car? How much does it cost you for a family sized car and where would you recommend hiring from?

If you have owned your car more than 2 years you can drive it over and use it in Malta.

I looked at the long lease option last year and found it to be one of the hardest things to sort out –  I specifically wanted an automatic which probably didn’t help but the options presented to me by various companies was extremely limited and poor – to the point that one company even brought a 4 year old battered Peugeot 207 to the house expecting me to pay EUR 500 with a  4 year commitment (this was their idea of a family car) – we opted to buy a new car in the end which was by far the easiest and so far the cheapest  option – finance offered by the garage over 5 years with a 25% deposit – tax and insurance reasonable and easy to arrange via a broker.

hiya :), thanks, we have looked at the cost of doing that. both our cars are within 2 yrs old and we would have to think about shipping costs/travel costs driving it over. We might just be better selling them and hiring.

Our car was 1 year and 50 weeks when we moved over – I held on to it in the UK to keep our options open but the import tax was too high. In hindsight had I known how difficult it was to get a decent long lease car I would have delayed moving to Malta for 2 weeks and imported the car over on a roll on roll off service which was reasonable priced and we could have filled the car up with our personal possessions as well and shipped over.

If still considering leasing then worth speaking to Mizzi Motors who have a leasing department (Godfrey Mangion +356 23264524) - he was very honest and upfront and can give you some options - although it would more than likely be a new car he purchases from the Mizzi Group (VW/Audi/Nissan etc) and leases to you over the long term but he might have some other options as well.

When I considered leasing I could get a small car for €300 pm. All inclusive.

I know this is a very old thread, but can you tell me where you leased a small car (what model?) forr 300 pm all inclusive?
I'll move to Malta in a few months, my 2008 Astra, valued at 2500 Euro, would cost me nearly 2000 Euro in registration tax (I haven't owned it for more than 2 years), that's just crazy!!

Red Mick is no longer living here so you will not get an answer from him.

I checked it out last year and it worked out around €340 a month for a small Peugeot 108 fully maintained and including tax (can't remember, but I think it also included insurance)
The company name escapes me but there hire car business is 'First car hire'

Decided not to bother as that's very high compared with many other countries and I just hire on a regular basis for a few days at a time when I need to. I have a car for 4 days about every 3 weeks which allows us to do big shopping trips etc. (costs me €10 a day this time of year from Mayjo ) The rest of the time we use the buses which are very good in Gozo.

I have been looking into car leasing and it does seem very expensive, Avis quoted me 375pm for a tiny compact car, even though I am after a 5 door small family car.

One option I am considering is hiring via the bigger companies at the airport, you can get a small 5 door family car for under 300 for 4 weeks hire. Simply return it to the airport on day 30 and pick up another one. Bit of a pain going to the airport every month, but worth it if it saves 100 odd Euro pm.

The other option is of course, just to hire a car for a few days here and there when needed. Weekend trips to the beach and big food shopping missions etc. Does anyone know of local providers that are reliable and cheap for 3/4 day hire cars (small family cars)?

Thanks,

What I know for sure is that now in the summer the rental prices have almost doubled at the airport companies... rented a car for 9 days at the end of July for less than 20 € a day, now in August I've booked with the same company, it's 30 € a day for 7 days... A friend once advised me to try the smaller local companies, but at least here in Mellieha they'll take about 50 € per day, so no alternative...

Btw, one curious detail - I booked through holidayautos, was cheaper than with the rental company directly... but it was about 30 € cheaper when I gave my Maltese address, would have been more expensive with my Austrian address...

We only rent a car once every three weeks so that we can go shopping, this time of year its expensive but out of season cheap, I think we only pay €10 a day then, we rent on Gozo with Mayjo.  The rest of the time we either walk or catch a bus as the bus service on Gozo is very good.

Have you tried http://www.activegroup.com.mt/EN/conten … ease_Deals .? They do leasing for 30 days+ Starting at €279 per month including insurance.

Just out of curiosity - do you have problems with full buses not even stopping to let anyone on in Gozo, too? I was trying to catch a bus from Xemxija to Mosta (wanted to go to Lidl) today after work, and a total of 8 buses were too full and didn't even stop... I was standing at the bus stop for 55 minutes to catch a bus, only to find out that Lidl had closed 5 minutes before I finally got there... Same yesterday trying to get home from work, wanted to catch a bus from Mellieha to Xemxija and it was 40 minutes before finally one stopped and let people on... So I'd definitely say the bus service in Malta - at least now in tourist season and when I finish work at around 5pm - is anything but good, and I'd prefer to go by car anytime!

We are in our fifth year of using the buses and this was the first time my husband was unable to get on a bus to the harbour because it was full.  Since living in Victoria we tend to get on at the bus station
as it is easier as the buses going to the main touristy areas are very busy but no where as bad as Malta, it must been very frustrating living there.  The drivers here are also more helpful here and do acknowledge you.

Hi,

I did try active but did not see anything that cheap, I will try again because I dont really want to pay over 300pm.

However, as we are living in Swieqi and spending most of our time around this area and St. Julian's, I hope that we only need a car for weekends, when exploring the island. Even if it costs 70 EUR for 2 days, getting one every weekend is still cheaper than leasing.

But, need to find a good local rental, as dont want to go to the airport for pick up ideally.

Savak

Found out today that Active do advertise 30 day rental for 279 but this price is without VAT. They sent me four options for my request for a small family car and the cheapest was a Peugeot 107 for 400 EUR!

Leasing the same car for a year would be 290pm, which is the cheapest I have found so far, but a 107 is not big enough.

All of these prices drop significantly if purchasing from October onward of course, you can get a 207 on their 30 day rental offer, in Nov & Dec for 300pm

Definitely looks like the local rental for weekends here and there will be the cheapest, if not most convenient option.
