I'm visiting Malta with my family this week and was wondering if we could meet up with anyone who has experience of sending their kids to state schools. I've been finding it really difficult to get much information out of the schools and have tried to arrange visits but they have all said it's not standard procedure.
Need some advice and a general chat about areas and schools. Could anyone spare an hour for a chat?
Please PM me if anyone is available on Friday or Saturday.
Thanks in advance x.

there are tons of school topics on this forum that can probably answer 90% of your questions, did you read them?
i went trough same problems as you and found almost all my answers here

It's just a bit weird that we can't visit any state schools?

Hi, yes, that is true, normally they just do not show around parents and I have just received a letter from the headmaster telling me off because I accompany my 3 years old to her classroom without asking permission from the admin staff first (the parents should drop off their children at the gates, but when we are late I take her straight to her classroom instead of passing her to the staff, which is a no-no here. So I am in the building without permission even though her classroom is about 10 m from the admin office and entrance and the admin staff buzzing me in and seeing entering:))). However if you are going to be in Malta on Friday morning and have the time you can join me. My children are having their carnival day and parents are invited to the activities:)). The go to Gzira primary.

On a positive note I spoke with the ministry of education regarding enrolment of foreign students today and I was told that right now no appointment needed, parents can show up with the necessary documents every weekday till 3 pm and they no longer ask for residency permit (not even proof of application) to enrol children. I am sure it is going to change soon as the protocol has changed couple of time in the last year, but right now it is a good news.

Thanks jabakir that's really good to know that enrolment in schools is fairly straight forward. Schools do seem to have very strict rules!
We're here now, so let the house hunting begin! We would love to go to your school's carnival day, but we're tied up on that morning.
Would you recommend Gzira primary for kids who don't have any knowledge of Maltese?

Duxx

my son goes to gzira primary and when he started he didnt even speak english

there is a new program (in which all st. claire collegue schools are involved) for kids who dont speak english

each morning a minibus picks kids up in front of the school, takes them to pembrook and they teach basic english there. Around noon they bring them back to their school and then kids go to their class until 14:00

ofc, he doesnt speak maltese also, but that is not a problem couse out of 13 kids in his class more then half are not maltese children so most of the teaching is on english
but they do teach maltese language :)

and the carnival in gzira primary was today, and on that subject I'm completely mad at school because nowhere was written that school ends early today, and we got like 4 notes with schedule for next 7 days
and what happened? poor kid with 10 more children waited until they called his mother to pick him up at 12:40

this is the 3 time they pissed me off, and now they and MoE will gate a nice and juicy email

I can recommend pembroke's st Clare primary school. It is new bilding and my daughter has liked it very much. She didn't speak maltese or english at all when she started last october, but everything has gone very well and we are very happy the school. She don't have to study maltese but she has learn very much english. Most classes are taught in English and she get private basic english lessons with 3 other kids in School.
