It is beautiful symbolism but when you come here I think you will find that the government doesn't do a lot for the worker or the farmer (not to mention that they along with the intellectuals and others need to bite their lounges lest they want prison to be their new home) so there isn't a whole lot of socialism going on (in fact there is less socialism here than any country I've ever been to but be prepared for a plethora of anti-communist rhetoric to follow from people who haven't noticed that - symbolism aside - Vietnam is far more capitalist than socialist in any meaningful sense).

We can keep communism on theory not in practical life  :D
If they hold communism then their pockets never fill up with green bills!
Disclaimer: No politics please!

Vietnam has adopted capitalism with conditions. It is still a state directed economy, with some decisions (such as the location of petrochemical plants) being made upon political rather than economic reasons. So it is capitalist in some senses, and not capitalist in others. My latest visit has convinced me that some parts of the economy are slipping away from government control, but I still need to brush up on what the Economist has to say about the current VN economy. This is the first time I've seen them (the South only) clearly better off than in 1968.

As for what the flag stands for, remember that the current colors are the same colors used in previous Vietnamese flags, though with an obviously different design. And that color combination (red and gold) is as old as Chinese civilization.

The government has certainly lost control of some sectors, seeing as the government owns a big slice of business here you would think they would do something to rectify the problems. There has been a hell of a lot in the media of late about the money being wasted by the boys and girls at the top of these companies. But the mentality of the government is still very much communist.

As the saying goes .... If socalists understood economics they wouldnt be socialists.

Ask who?

Who the hell cares about flags.  Anyone who'd die for a flag is a sap.

And what's there to understand about economics?  It's not remotely scientific.  I'd rather study phrenology or mesmerism.
