I am wondering if fabric shops like JoAnn Fabrics and etc. are to be found in PR? Also craft stores such as Michael's.  Any info would be appreciated.  We will be living in the west of PR.

I haven't found any, though it does not mean they don't exist - I was not looking for them, since I do not use them in the US either.
However there are cultural differences between US an PR and these are often reflected in what type of goods and services are available/sought after.

OK, maybe not JoAnn Fabrics - but are there stores where you can buy your own  material to make clothes and etc?

Yes, there are plenty of fabric stores. All the school kids have to wear uniforms and they are usually custom made. People still sew a lot down there. Minerva909 is right about different customs in PR. You won't be finding a lot of things you are used to in the states. On the other hand, you will also discover a lot of wonderful and new things once you are there. They used to have a Michael's in Mayaguez but it went out of business. As far as I know there aren't any others on the island.

There was a place similar to Michaels in the San Juan metropolitan area, but I haven't been there in a while, so I don't know if it still exists.  Some of my relatives sew their own clothing and they are able to find beautiful fabrics and ornamentations which I haven't seen here in Miami.

There's a craft store here in Caguas -- little mom & daughter place. My wife tried to do Stampin Up demos there, but they were a little too disorganized for her.

Up Rt 30 from San Juan, off at Plaza Centro exit, take a right on big avenue just past the mall (Munoz Marin), and it's among the shops on the other side of the street. You'll have to pull a u-turn around the boulevard divider.

Approx there -> craft store

If you come to the city, there is a great fabric store in San Juan (specifically Santurce) down near Pavia Hospital Complex.  I believe the name is something like JB Fabrics.

It is on Ave Fernandos Juncos (which is one-way) on the right about a block or two past the pink post office near Pavia hospital complex.  It is on a corner, and I believe the cross street is Del Parque.

My wife and I bought some awesome fabric for having a couple of benches recovered and pillows made.

Jasonb,

Thanks for your post.  I went to that fabric store to find fabric for curtains, and your directions were spot-on.  The friend I was with who's been living in San Juan for 3 years had no idea it was there, and was thrilled to find it.

One note, they seem to only carry bulk household fabrics.  It's perfect for my curtain needs, but I wouldn't consider them a craft store or a place to get fabric for clothes.  The staff there was also really friendly and helpful.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not that familiar with the stores on the west coast, but the Walmart stores usually have a material and arts & crafts section. There are Walmarts in Mayaguez and Hatillo.

There are also at least two scrapbooking/crafts stores in the Guaynabo area. One on Tabonuco St near San Patricio Plaza, and the other one near Plaza Real Shopping Center.

I haven't been there yet, but recently found out that Capri appears to be like Micheals back home (they even have a website with the weeks flyer). tiendascapri.com/blog

jr23 is right Capri and also Pitusa are the closest things to Micheals and JoAnns back home. Unless of course you can find a small mom and pop store. You can usually find one like that in the "Pueblo" or in the "Plaza Del Mercado" every pueblo has one it's usually in the center of the "Pueblo" next to the main church.

I am thrilled to say that I stumbled upon a fantastic fabric store today in Bayamon called American Plastics & Fabrics:  http://en.infopaginas.com/b/bayamon/ame … -fabrics-5
Salesman Gilbert was very helpful in assisting us with our needs.  They also have shops in Caguas, Carolina, Mayaguez, Ponce, SJ, and Vega Baja.

Ok...so Michael's left the Island years ago...No JoAnn's.  Pitusa that was mentioned...went out of business this year...they didn't have fabric it was more School Supplies.  Capri is not really like Michael's but they have a nice but small Craft and Fabric Section. There is the Fabric section in Walmart and yes American Plastics & Fabrics is a good fabric store...also there are a lot of small local Fabric stores all over the island.
