NIE and social security numbers

AlexSarah

Hi,

I'm a UK citizen who will be residing in Spain for 6 months (May-December) whilst completing an internship. I've read conflicting information about whether I need to apply for an NIE number and social security number. The internship itself is unpaid, and I receive free accommodation provided by the employer, and it is for a 6 month period.

Could anyone clarify whether I am required to apply for these and the legitimate way to do so?

Thanks, Alex

In theory if you stay more than 3 months, you should get it.

Your Europe

Hello Alex,
if you stay in Spain for over 3 months, you must register with the Central Register of Foreign Nationals (Registro Central de Extranjeros), no later than 3 months after arriving in Spain. Depending on where you're staying, you can either do this in the Register's local office (oficina de extranjería) in the province where you're going or, if the Register has no local office in your province, in your local police station. You'll need to bring:
- your passport which must of course be valid for the duration of your stay,
- proof of health cover valid in Spain; and
- a formal declaration that you have sufficient means to support yourself during your stay.

Good luck!
