Health insurance!!! Help!!!

Post new topic

Hi,

I am moving to Birmingham Sept 1. I'm an American, but also have an Irish Passport (have an irish dad), though I've never been a resident of Ireland.

I wasn't sure how to go about looking for health coverage and what the usual steps that involves. or suggestions on good private companies etc.

If anyone can let me know i would appreciate it!

thanks,
Emily

Hi-

You'll want to register with your local GP first. You can find one listed on this NHS site by entering in your post code (of where you will be living).

http://www.nhs.uk/servicedirectories/pa … earch.aspx

Select a GP in your catchment area that is accepting new patients (should be noted on the site), go in to the office (also called "surgery") with your passport, proof of address (a bill or bank statement) and they will ask you to fill out a new patient registration form.

Even if you sign up for private medical coverage (BUPA is the most common)you may still need referrals from your GP's office before you visit a private doctor.

So at the very least, one of the first things you will want to do is register with an NHS GP. You won't need to pay anything when you do this. You will also be set up with an NHS number by post shortly after.

Good luck!
