I am a Board Certified Internal Medicine  specialist with much experience in Hospital and Academic Internal Medicine.  Discouragement with what is happening in the US and the world, makes Belize seem like a wonderful place to move to and become a Belizean citizen. What are the barriers for an American physician to move to Belize with his possessions and autos, and to find employment.

My undestanding - though I don't have personal experience yet- is that it is difficult to get licensed and practice in Belize. Dr. Al, who was banned from this forum, had some good advice from his experience practicing in Belize in the past. It is do-able, but not as easy as in some other places. Belizeans, especially the government, are not very amenable to electronic communication, and person-to-person is the best option. I have tried to communicate with multuiple entities in Belize via email without success, including the Ministry of Health, the  school of Medicine, and others.
My intention, is that after I move, I will get licensed to practice in Belize, pro bono. I am not planning to practice for any income, but would like to volunteer my services in the future. I am an M.D., FACEP.
As for moving with posessions and autos, read the advice of others here about importing items. We probably won't import much - clothes, linens, bedding, cookware, tools. We are definitely looking forward to our relocation. Some of our reasoning is similar to yours, as well as a lot of other ex-pats.
Visit and then decide. Good Luck regardless of your decision.

I too feel your pain.  Im a board certified foot/ankle surgeon (podiatrist) with private practice, academic experience, wound care and nueropathy interests.  I have talked with numerous people, many of whom say they have friends in government that could help make the proper contacts to plug me into the licensing pathway.  So far, no word!  If you find a way, pleaseet me know!
Thanks

Gentlemen who wish to set up a medical practice in Belize...... you will NEVER NEVER EVER get a work permit in Belize to practice medicine.   Period.   anyone who tells you otherwise is misleading you.

Please elaborate on your reply.

There is such a need for good experienced doctors here. PLEASE COME!  Contact Diane Stillman R.N.  She is a retired hospital administrator from Seattle who has been trying to put a facility together along with the support of the Mennonite community of Spanish Lookout. There is also a group of investors exploring Medical Tourism which the Belize government is very open to.  Diane's email is:  dianestillman@hotmail.com

I am also a GP MD. Getting anywhere with the GOB and the Belize Medical Council is an exercise in futility. They are a serious pain in the ass to deal with. I have held licences in Saskatachewan,Ontario, Nova Scotia, Kansas and New Mexico at one time or another. But only in Belize have I met so much obstructionism in a place with so many needs. The medical tourism plan is a serious joke from what I can gather. As I recall Dr Al had a temp. license for one year after being sponsored by a local clinic. Too bad he was banned.
