Important ECJ ruling on non-EU citizens travel to other EU countries.

From the following ECJ judgement this morning, it would appear non-EU nationals with legal residence documents from a EU country can travel to any other EU country without a visa (but passports still required of course).  It's a very important ruling for free movement of families with a non-EU national.  But don't take my word for it check with embassies. Obviously if you don't need a visa anyway, then there's no change for you.  But those that do need visas will find this very useful to know.

non-EU nationals do not need a visa for inter-EU travel if they have any EU country residence permit

Hello fluffy2560,

Thank you for this sharing of information :)

p.s.  the terms of the ECJ ruling are not entirely clear as it was non-binding. However, usually, at least in the UK, ECJ rulings are adopted by the courts and become part of case law.  Since it was the ECJ, the same legal argument should be possible in other EU countries. So I advise anyone who needs a visa to take their non-EU family member (with legit residence permit/ID card) to another EU state to contact the relevant embassy to find out if a visa is stil required. It will take the embassies/countries sometime to consider the impact so don't expect any sudden changes.
