Good day! I'm John Christian, an architecture student from Manila and I am currently working on my thesis. The study I am working on is about retirement villages for foreigners and I am required to study their culture and activities while they are staying here in the Philippines.

Is there any way you guys can help me to be able to study their lifestyles? Is there any person you can actually recommend to me that can possibly help me out?

Your help regarding this matter is highly appreciated. Thank you so much

Hi Jc

A big question, as you are probably aware, retirement villages in Australia are in big demand.
And in effect there are probably two different audience that a Retirement Village would be looking at, one would be people like me (mostly single males) who enjoy the Philippines for what it is, I have made a list of what I would seek from a RV below.  The other target audience would be attracting couple from Australia, America, etc.  These people will be looking for a "shiner" neater and more organised type place (consider what western women like, because the bloke will not get a say)

From my perspective, what I would seek from such a place in the Philippines would be the following:

* A trusted place, word of mouth spreads quickly
* Security
* Access to a bar to drink at and socialise in.
* A smoking area, for those of us that still like the habit.
* An area over looking a niece view (the mountains or the ocean)
* Views not into someone else's apartment
* Access a medical clinic, and if needed nursing in my room
* Cleaning service
* Meals served in my apartment, or in a dinning area, or in the bar - choice of all three.
* Stable footing all round, this includes the public walkways and in the apartments which would cover the design of the floors (no steps, especially on slippery surfaces)
* Wheel chair access, in public areas and in my apartment.
* I know that space is limited in the Philippines due to the cost of the land, however if it is not all at ground level then elevators have to be in place so people don't have to use steps.
* Design of taps and fitting to enable easy use by people who have arthritis
* Bed to be the correct height so they are easy to get in and out of.
* WIFI through out.
* TV in the living area as well as the bedroom.
* Technical support for computer etc.
* Air-conditioning
* Fire detection and suppression systems.
* Separate bedroom to the living area.
* Living and cooking can be in the same area/room, but there should be some separation such a an island bench.
* A in house alert system so that if some one falls over they can simply press a alarm (general on a necklace) that alerts a nurse to come and assist.
* And a double bed in my room, not a queen size or single.

Not sure if this is the sort of information that you are seeking or not?  I do hope that it helps.

If building apartments for couples then ensure that there are apartments with two bedrooms, as some older people don't want to sleep in the same bedroom as there wife/husband.
