Western Expats wearing Niqab?

I am not Muslim or from the Gulf.  I am debating about buying a Niqab. As I already cover my hair whenever I leave my compound I would not like to stand out when I am in public.  I am an American and would like to be as respectful as possible when I go out. Is it disrespectful to wear a Niqab if I am not Saudi or Muslim in the realm of cultural appropriation?

You want to respect the religion and culture wear it...If you don't it's upto you...But I guess the Muttawa police may make you wear it if they do find you....

ColdWater

I think it would be unexpected, but not disrespectful. If you ask me, if would not recommend you to do so.

Really ? Really ?

They cannot force you to wear a niqab.

It's optional OP

Niqaab is not a mandatory in the religion but a personal choice. You, as a non Muslim don't have to wear it.
In my personal opinion neither the scarf but if the host country ask for it, you have to follow the regulation.

Its up to you to wear it, if you feel more comfortable then why not?

It is not disrespectful at all, feel free to wear it.

rareshine

if its mandatory or not is up for discussion (in another forum) but ultimately for a westerner it a choice. also. niqab is not a saudi thing, its a religious thing.

There is no reason to wear it.

Dear,

It is ok if you are covering your head but it is not necessary to wear a niqab as you are not a Muslim. Only thing being an American you should travel and maintain your profile with a group of people while moving out of your compound.  I work for an Irish company in Saudi Arabia and have been working in Saudi Arabia for at least 25 years now.  I also go to Aramco at Dhahran.

Regards
Brian

No.  It isn't disrespectful.

I admire that you cover your hair though you are not Muslim. I would say no need for the niqab there is also a lot of locals that only wear hijab. In Islam hijab and niqab is both ok.

it is not only respect, it is honor and chastity to wear niqab

worldtravller

I used to live in Khobar and see lots of western and Arabs women without any head cover at all, however, they wear Abaya, and it was OK.

The situation may be different in other Saudi districts (i.e. Jeddah, Riyadh), however, as much your cloth is not showing your body, it'll be OK.

wearing Hijab for Muslims women is not an optional, it is mentioned in the holey quran that muslem women must wear hijab if they are with people not part of their families.  it is clear in surah Alahzab as mentioned bellow,

(O you Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring-down their garments, that is the least to be known, so do not disturb.
God is Forgiving and Most Merciful (59))

down is the Arabic translation from the holey quran.
.( ياأيها النبي قل لأزواجك وبناتك ونساء المؤمنين يدنين عليهن من جلابيبهن ذلك أدنى أن يعرفن فلا يؤذين وكان الله غفورا رحيما ( 59 ) )

but for none Muslim women, it is up to them, if they are not joining with Muslim society.
