Can I live in Glasgow on approx £1,000 per month?

Post new topic

MplsRose

I am seriously considering and hoping to move from Mpls MN, USA to Glasgow.  My family is from Glasgow, both parents and older siblings born there, and almost all of my aunts, uncles & cousins currently live in Glasgow. (Parents & grandparents have passed)  I spent a great deal of my childhood in Glasgow and have dreamt all my life of moving to what I've always thought of as my "real" home.

I haven't been back since 2002.

Is it possible for me to live in Glasgow on the (approximately) £1,000 to £1,200 that I bring home each month.

Yes, but you won't be well off.

It will be tough but doable for one person. But if you work you will surely make more that that

Stay with your Glasgow relatives and it will be easy.

Its definitely do able but like Fred has said, you wont be well off. Everything you earn will essentially go towards any bills and essentials you want. There will not really be anything left over for yourself. You may think you'll be willing to sacrifice these to be back in your 'real home' but after a while, not being able to treat yourself or indulge a little might make you resent being in Glasgow. I'd suggest like ScotsAlan maybe staying with relatives until you are more financially secure and can realistically support yourself. If you do not want to do this then try and find a roommate ect, which will cut your costs substantially. Also where you live in Glasgow also depends on how much you will spend, be realistic about what you can afford and look at the area you will be living in. You dont want to live in a bad area in Glasgow because thats all you can afford, that too may also make you resent being there.

Hi!  I have lived in Glasgow for 10 yrs & now own a flat 14 miles away. A  Flat may cost you £80 per week, then you should add £20 for electricity, then there is that dreaded council tax another £20 per week,£30 for food if you cook it yourself, and that will cost you £150 per week, the rest is yours to spend or save. So the Answer is Yes you definitely can. Hope this helps!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The Numbeo website will answer most, if not all of your cost of living questions; this link will take you straight there.

Should just add, most landlords are looking for a substantial deposit when you move in; we hear of up to 6 months rent in advance.

Hope this helps.
