When Chroeb first opened the Bamboo Drink stand, her brother, Dong, as in Ding-dong, came down from Phnom Penh to help run the business. I let him use the spare bedroom across from ours, it has it's own bath, big window, a fan, and I gave him a TV. Not a word of gratitude from him. Things began to deteriorate as the month ran by. I noticed that he rarely showered, and I had to tell Chroeb to tell him to make use of the shower, gave him soap, shampoo, wash cloths, and towels. Not much improvement there. The room was always dirty, with trash and litter covering the floor. Again, I asked Chroeb to tell him to clean up his room - I felt like the parent of an 8 yr old boy. He is in his early 30's!!!. While he helped run the business outside our door, I noticed he would put his bare feet up on the table, where customers would put their drinks while consuming them. Again, I told Chroeb that it drives customers away when they see his dirty feet on the table. This worked for about 2 days.
Another issue developed, the electric bill came in, and their share of the bill, for running the refrigerator-freezer came to $32 - they were very upset. I looked in the freezer, and noticed that it was less that 1/4 full. I explained (or tried) that the freezer has to work much harder to keep the air cold than if it was full of frozen articles. I suggested that they put several large bottles of water in there at night, which would freeze and help keep it cool during the day. I also suggested that they move it off the concrete, which gets very hot, into the shade by the door. This they did. The second bill came in for $38 - and they were even more upset. I told them to shut down the freezer, unless it was bringing in about $1.50 a day net profit. They refused to do that. Then they wanted ME to pay half of their freezer bill. I refused. At this point, tourist season was nearly over, so I suggested that they shut it down for a few months. They didn't want to do that either. Finally, I had reached my limit. I told them to shut the business down, and that Dong had to go. I could no longer stand his filthy habits, and arrogant attitude. He thought that Chroeb should take care of him before me. Out he went, taking the Bamboo Machine, and the mattress with him. I would have burned it any way. This put Chroeb in a bad situation. Many phone calls back and forth between her, Dong, and younger sister. I felt like they were planning something, and since I was in the middle of it, it wouldn't work out well for me.
On Sunday night, June 7, Chroeb asked me to set her alarm on her phone for 0500, " So she could clean the house very clean". I set her alarm. After she woke up, I expected to hear lots of cleaning noises from downstairs, but heard none. Finally, around 7:30AM, I went down and found the house empty, door locked from the outside. I went around the back with my keys, and the neighbor stopped me, and gave me Chroebs set of keys.
She was gone. At 9:30AM,. I get a text messages, saying "I go a way, not stay with you because you not love me..." obviously not written by her. as she doesn't have those writing skills.
Though there have been many phone calls from her, some saying she wants to come back, others demanding money. I am sure this is just another ploy for money. It is apparent that money is what she is after now. I am moving on, hoping to find a new woman some time in the future.
