Therefore I would like to know what you missed the most - so far on the list I have:

Sausages
Marmite
Proper bread
Cadburys Chocolate
Real Ale
Any type of cheese that''s not Gouda.
Eggnog

Many Thanks for your help!

sausages! Iceland's only native sausage is smoked horsemeat and tastes wretched. They're getting a few other kinds now (mostly Polish) but no spicy Italian, good German style sausages, or breakfast sausages.

Otherwise I've lived here for long enough that I've forgotten most other things that were part of my American life.

HyggeTime

Decent bread, British TV, mild weather, Tesco, friends, London in general. I miss those the most and I have only been away for a month!! :D

Humour often depends on a shared background and references to television programmes of the 1960s etc will get you nowhere in a country that only got TV for the first time in the 1970s.

I think it can be broken down into two categories.

Universal things that don't depend on country:
- family
- friends
- speaking native language
- familiar places where you used to go
- nature of your home country

Country specific things:
- food (I live in Spain and this country has some of the best food in the world. But still, there are so many things missing.)
- clothes/dressing style/brands
- cultural differences

I don't miss anything - there's so many other things in different countries! I think you just have to enjoy what you get, otherwise you'll be in a perpetual state of homesickness.
