Wallace has ruled himself out. Maidens has declined the offer to run with Sunak and so block Johnson, but has not ruled herself out (yet).

Looks like the autocorrect gremlins have been at work.
Apparently Penny M's so called naval service is a nonsense - she was never formally commissioned and her title is only honorary.
Shame about Wallace but maybe his time will come.
Sunak might find himself PM because no other candidate has got any serious credentials.
But whoever gets the big job is in temporarily. Election is looming.
Indeed, Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell are nothing but narcissistic, egomaniacal trouble in the US.
The US spent trillions (yes, with a "T") in Afghanistan, only to see it fall in a month. The mere Billions that the US is providing to Ukraine -- with much of that coming back to US companies for Ukraine to buy American goods and older military hardware and munitions that would have had to be destroyed anyway -- is HUGE value for money. It is breaking Russia from within at mere pennies and with no loss of American lives.
The US just needs to get over the "hump" of the next 2-4 years to wash out the GOP which has no platform other than blocking everything, no ideas other than those that endanger/harm the working poor and benefit the rich. One of the overriding themes, with voices getting louder, is in regards to consequences. We've been given the constant drip, drip of news that tells us that Trump, his family, his associates are under investigation, that there is incontrovertible proof of illegal actions, and yet Trump is still free, his allies still roaming. Where are the consequences? The news states that the DOJ is waiting post-election in November before bringing charges. This is really intolerable. No normal citizen would get the deference that these politi-foes are enjoying. It's infuriating.
Both of those people (McCarthy and McConnell) are two of the worst examples of human beings you can imagine.
Trump needs destroying right now. There's no way that nut job should be back in the White House. According to various reports Trump did not and probably still doesn't understand nuclear weapons. He apparently seemed to think that if they were never intended to be used, they were useless and should be scrapped. If that moron gets back in power, we'll be back with him under control of his handler, Vlad. The quicker he's banged up in jail and out of politics, the better.
I've just seen Steve Bannon get 4 months in jail and a $6.5K fine. Is that all? OK, it's for contempt and nothing like what the DoJ wanted. Bannon was allegedly involved with Trump over the Capitol riots.
For Hungary, the pressure is mounting. But O1G and associates have insulated themselves by having much of their corrupted gains hidden offshore, buffered from any forint damage. As he and the Fidesz party have just been re-elected by a landslide, he can be patient. But Hungary has been chastised by NATO, the EU, and even the US directly recently:
And quite rightly so that HU should have its knuckles rapped. But there's a twist in that Turkey has done similar things and they've just kept going and doing the same kind of thing and maintaining relations with Putin. In other words, O1G can continue to do whatever he wants. He chucks out stuff out that's anti-EU but he still votes for sanctions etc. Then blames the EU. It's all just a smokescreen. All he wants to do is remain in power.
I remember reading that the HU Gov't had proposed some lackluster anti-corruption measures, but they were rejected unanimously by the EU Commission as too little, and having no real power within the HU Gov't. Honestly, sounds a lot like the EU having little power to punish Hungary's illiberal democracy itself. Luckily, the Rule of Law does not require unanimity but they also have to be willing to use their power, something the EPP in the past has been too hesitant to try. Now with Italy sliding in a troubling direction, perhaps they will find some stronger backbone.
Illiberal democracy is an oxymoron.
And of course, every time I want O1G to lose, to feel pain, I know that I am only hurting myself, because I live and work here. The value of my home has plummeted, the value of my salary has plummeted. I do not see these recovering any time soon. I used to say, my flat has doubled in value! Only to remember the forint has halved, meaning I've gone nowhere. The longer I stay here, the worse it is getting, but with the value falling so much, it's also more difficult to leave. Troubling times for many, not just me, I know....
-@Vicces1
You're not the only one who is beginning to question what the point of staying is. We've got kids in school and the quality of their education is plummeting. We're having to look to private tutors because the standards are so low. Education is a life long investment. What happens now will affect their entire lives. It's a terrible issue.

It's what happens when you post from a mobile phone (I really don't like it) and have the dexterity of a scarecrow with fish fingers on the end of its arms.
Mordaunt was a Naval Reservist (acting sub-lieutenant, the lowest form of life on the mess-deck) and spent a lot of her time on the inactive list, whatever she did while in uniform, it hasn't granted her any super-human powers and her subsequent promotions to Commander and then Captain were honorary and the Cynic in me thinks may have more to do with her being Defence Secretary for a short time, than her abilities in a boat.
Anyway, she's now announced her candidacy, which means she has at least 100 MPs and maybe more, perhaps enough to knock out the 3rd candidate (whoever that may be). This new style of politics is doing my head in; I still want an election.

I find typing on the phone using both thumbs the easiest.
I was thinking the autocorrect might have been hinting that Morduant was an Iron Maiden - like Thatcher.
If there really was some AI behind autocorrect, it might have replaced Morduant with Mordor because that's where everyone is.
I am beginning to think a lot of these elections of a leader are just death throes and circling the plughole.
On the other hand, it'd be at least 6 weeks to reach an election and then we'll all be well into winter and still no-one at the wheel. Not even someone asleep. Literally no-one.
And as for the £115K to run an office plus pensions etc for life, pfff....for 45 days. Nice work if you can get it.
BBC reports that Sunak is in the lead.
Surprising claims of racism in the Tories over his potential election.
He was after all Chancellor, one of the great offices of state.
Penny M is not doing well and neither is Boris.

Apparently there will be video hustings.
It's interminable.
I reckon first past the post and be done with it!
BTW, Johnson arrives back from the Caribbean this morning. Maybe he'll announce as he passes through the airport.
Out of the lot of them, I favour Sunak although the real answer has to be an election.
My only concern about Sunak is that he'll push that ludicrous Indian trade deal Truss put together. His Mrs and her Dad will want it. As far as I understand it, the Indians will get something akin to free movement from India into the UK whereas us Brexit sufferers and our friends in Europe get nothing. How absurd is that? It's not being racist, it's just that India is no friend of the UK as far as Ukraine is concerned and hasn't been that friendly for a long time.
BTW, I've tried to go to India for tourism and it's really difficult to go there - visa process is too much hassle. I gave up.

-@fluffy2560
Of which, I've just seen him announce his appeal (he's never going to go behind bars); if the Republicans win the mid-terms, this whole thing is going to be kicked into the end-zone. I'll be amazed if either Trump or Bannon is held to account.

If I were in their position and had the votes in my pocket (just like Sunak has), I'd wait till Monday lunchtime before I said anything; why would they expose themselves to a weekend's worth of hostile press corps?

Looks like it'll be dead in the water. Mid-terms will finish it. Trump wouldn't have to answer any questions - he could just take the 5th. He might not even turn up.
On the other hand, Bannon did get sentenced before a Trump appointee judge who might just be doing the right thing for the right reasons.
But I think you're right, by the time Trump would be before the judge for contempt, the whole thing will be dismissed.
It would be good if he would be behind bars though, even if it was a for a few months.

I'm beginning to think it doesn't matter which one it is.
They are all going to be the same as they have the same credentials they did before.

It's actually worse than you think. A Trump-appointed judge sentenced Bannon to those 4 months, pending appeals which could take years. In other words, the judge could have made him serve time now, but cut him a break by allowing him to remain free pending all his appeals. It will be years, if ever, he sees this measly 4 months.
Rishi Sunak is expected to confirm his candidacy to be the next leader of the party and prime minister "soon", according to campaign sources.
The ex-chancellor is the first candidate to secure the 100 nominations to get to the first round of voting in the contest to replace Liz Truss.
Boris Johnson has flown back from holiday amid speculation he will run.
Commons leader Penny Mordaunt is so far the only contender to have officially launched a leadership campaign.

Boris Johnson reaches 100 backers
Former British PM Boris Johnson now has more than 100 backers among Conservative MPs, meaning he could be on the ballot on Monday if he chooses to be, reports BBC.
Supporters of Sunak, who served as chancellor under Johnson, said on Friday night he had received nominations from 100 Tory MPs to pass the threshold required way ahead of Monday’s deadline. There was no word from Sunak, who has yet to publicly declare his candidacy.

What a poison pill for Sunak. Take over a party in chaos, who are still mulling a Boris return, or simply step aside for a better time, but then allowing Boris a stronger hand to return... If it weren't for his (and wife's) tax shenanigans, and the fate of a once great nation at stake that has now become an international farce, I'd feel bad for him...

Oh, that's terrible! I didn't realise that. He should have locked him up for 4 months straight away. So if Trump is up in front of him, I suppose that'll be more of the same. Just a light tap on the head instead of a punch in the face.

Looks like Sunak is pulling ahead with 110 nominations.
If he won, I wonder if he'd bring back Boris in some role?
Maybe ideal job for Boris would be Minister for Ukrainian Conflict Relations - keep him busy and allow him some narrow grandstanding.
I can see Rees-Mogg being pushed onto the back benches. We'll all be safer if that happens.
Has anyone noticed the very rejoin the EU marches have hardly made the news? It's bonkers, I heard on the radio, 200K people were there. Huge!

Guardian had something:
I've missed the sopa opera of politics for a few days.
Makes me really wonder why Liz was in office only 44 days. Waht was she used for, it seems obvious to my little brain that tehy pulled something behind the curtain and used her as a fall guy( gal).
Boris will return, he never wanted to leave in the first place. He got himself 6 weeks of vacation and is ready to step back where he left off.
Of course, IDK a thing.
Bannon? I got so bored with it all ages ago haven't follwed a word of it.
My perdictions are that King Charles will be in office a shockenly short time.
That Boris will return.
Biden is not going to be around for much longer, his VP will drop the ball and be removed.
Trump will return for a very short time , Obama will somehow get a 3rd term under some new rule or national crises.
I won't say more because I think even more madness is about to unfold, buckle up.
Just my predictions on a lazy Sunday morning sitting at my laptop.
The ,"Turning World" soap
opera.

I agree, it's a soap opera that runs and runs. If it's not one crisis, it'll be another one. It does generate plenty to gossip about. Like show business in some ways.
Charlie boy will last some years. He's got some good genes and access to unlimited medical expertise - both his parents were on the job well into their 90s and seemingly reasonably healthy. Queen seems to have been mentally on the ball until the end. We don't know about Philip.
Liz (the PM) was an amateur. She should have robustly stress tested her plans with the experts who were on hand to help her. She chose to gamble on her own and her Chancellor (finance minister) skills being superior. That's a blindingly obviously stupid approach.
We can only hope Trump-ovich becomes incapacitated in some way but who will his VP be? Not Mikhail "a few Pence short of a pound" again obviously. Maybe deSantis? Or is it "InSanityis"? Another lunatic ready to run the asylum. The problem (for us) is that the USA is a world power, possibly marginally THE world power (including China). Russia under Putin is a busted flush right now - be a pariah for generations. If the USA was Hungary, no-one would be paying any attention whatsoever.
I am looking forward to seeing the entire Trump family doing time. Be their just desserts for playing fast and loose with everything.
The bookies should start taking bets.
VO is suppose to be giving a speech today...
More on how great everything is and how they are keeeping HU safe.
Same old same old.

The editing modes on this thing are completely inconsistent. I've edited this about 10 times and I cannot get the format right.
Anyway.....
Oh, the bookies are giving odds all the time on the UK political choices. Odds are showing Boris is coming back but I am surprised since no-one knows if Boris is standing or if he's got more than 100 MPs on his side. It's coming down to Boris and/or Rishi. If they can do a deal, we'll just be back to where we were months ago. I cannot see Boris accepting being Chancellor or being competent at it. And I cannot see Rishi accepting the second job to the PM position. So maybe it's a case of plus ça change.
Current odds (as of this morning):
Rishi Sunak 1/6
Boris Johnson 1/4
Penny Mordaunt 12/1
Jeremy Hunt 150/1
Suella Braverman 150/1
Kemi Badenoch 150/1
OV is going to somewhere like Szombathely to give that speech. He knows that if he tries to give a speech in Budapest, he's going to be boo'd and heckled off the stage. His excuse for going out of the capital - apparently - was that there were more people in the countryside. WTF logic is that? I am sure it'll be a highly controlled event. Supporters only!
And as for keeping HU safe? Yeah, right, and if my grandmother had wheels, I'd be a bus.
p.s. Rishi has just said he's running - odds changed already

Still no announcement from either Boris or Rishi; it's driving the press insane, everyone they ask just says they don't know. Oh, hang on - press are now saying Sunak has announced he is standing, just as the Sunday Politics shows finished.
The funny thing about the Europe March yesterday, only the Guardian appears to have covered it nationally; a few of the London-centric press sites (link) are talking about tens of thousands blocking the Westminster bridge and the BBC morning news today had an interview with Guy Verhofstadt who suggested a new kind of conversation was required because the current one is going nowhere - which seems to be what Liz Lettuce was saying before she was unceremonially dumped last week; in terms of headlines the Stop the Oil campaign seems to be hogging most press coverage.
To add; Twitter has a bit about the march; there's a few Belgians commenting on the Irony of the backdrop:

Yes, Rishi has announced. Press have holes to fill and so they just endlessly speculate. But like Where's Wally? Where's Boris?
Verhofstadt is a nutter and a very loud one. I thought I had time for him but I saw him in a documentary and realised he generally has some screws loose. But he's right this time. A new conversation needs to be about rejoining or at least having a new deal on free movement. It's just not going to work as it is. The EU fingerprinting etc coming in and ETAIS is not going to be helpful. All the ports and airports are going to jammed up. I was at the airport yesterday and I got my passport stamped again as I left Hungary. I didn't bother arguing. I'm fed up with those people being ignorant.
Withdrawal Agreement Art. 50 Residence Permit in Hungary required me to give my dabs to the immigration but does that mean I'm already in the system or am I going to be hassled at the borders more than usual? Who knows?
Liz Lettuce?! I like it. I also like the idea of the UK EU supports are now known as Romaine-rs. People really are pretty funny. Respect to them. I feel sorry for the lettuce.
Stop the oil protesters are living in cloud cuckoo land. No-one is going to stop oil by blocking up the roads/bridges.
Not sure if this is going to work as it's behind a paywall:

I am wondering if I'm living in a parallel universe. So many shenanigans going on.
I quite like the idea of bringing back Bruce Willis. That's a Star worth having more than Boris.

I will never look at lettuces the same now.
I bet that Economist journalist is kicking him/herself they didn't corner the market on lettuce comparisons.
How long before this is on a T-shirt and will be meme'd relentlessly?
Rumour on Boris was that he would be elevated to the other place and made the Conservative Party chairman; which would tick a whole load of boxes.

Hmmm....that works quite well.
He'll be quids in on that. Steady income, lots of directorships, time to write books, hang out with his kids and be a power behind the throne. Maybe even Rishi's "Kings Hand" Game of Thrones style so to speak.
it's a bone your Boris will be jealous of.

I guess that's why I'm not rich. Too slow off the starting blocks.
One problem is that Mock the Week has now ended. Why? I don't know! Have I Got News For You is a poor substitute. We're living in such a rich time for satire.
I am now hoping some HU locals develop and a vegetable meme for Orban. Lettuce is a bit too posh.
Maybe a cabbage or cauliflower or maybe just an eggplant and two tomatoes.

I'm with you on that. I watch HIGNFY but I find little to laugh about. MTW was so much better. The quality of banter is too low on HIGNFY.
Dara will forever be Megabus Man!

Bit like the PM race. Looking for an opening to push out the current incumbent. Maybe the PM race needs to be settled by musical chairs. Rishi is going to win that. He's younger, looks fitter but doesn't have weight and volume on his side.
One of my weekly guilty pleasures was watching HIGNFY and then HIGMNFY and Mock the Week as well. I like them both but you are right, if I had to keep one, it would likely have been MTW. So many good comedians over the years, so much good satire. No offense to HIGNFY, as I said, I like them both, but MTW was my preferred indulgence.
There are 2 more weeks of MTW reviews and retros before it is officially quits, I'll watch them with a tear in my eye. And I'll think to myself, these are the exact times when we should have more of this satire. The current UK political crises are the exact time when we need such humour.

It's not a guilty pleasure! It's entirely justified. Maybe they will replace MTW with something of equal quality. BBC has an annoying habit of cancelling things if it gets a little bit un-PC. Mash Report was one example - it was behind MTW for sure but it was still better than HIGNFY.
The political situation everywhere across the world is distressing, unhappy, ridiculous, sad, horrific, boring and any number of descriptions one might care to use.
Winnie the Pooh is now Chairman for life in China. One man ruling over a billion souls.
In 2022, you'd think we'd be past these things.
