Not a fan of US food in general, but it's probably because they grass feed most of their animals and that comes out in the flavour of the food, it's what you're used to I guess.  A guy I knew in another place was a truck driver in the US, and he made some pretty amazing claims about what was in bottled drinks; I never knew if that was all true.        -@Cynic

There was a recent question on Mystery Hour on LBC with James O'Brien.

One caller said bottle water had a shelf life because of the plastic bottles it's stored in.  The micro plastics constituents leeches out over time.

No idea either if that's true.

Also not a fan of US food.  I visit the US sometimes and their average supermarket has no idea about the 1000s of varieties of cheese available around the world.  I don't know what it's like in US Aldi who are quite good on cheese here in HU.

Cheese might be an indicator of economic and social development.  Bit like the Big Mac Index of the Economist.

I can talk for hours about plastic bottles; I spent an inordinate part of my life looking at transporting and recycling the damn things.  In general, everything degrades over time, and plastic is no different in this respect.  It very much depends on what the container was used for, whether it was re-used for anything else, and the condition it was left in after use and when you check it.  Nobody (and I mean none) had done any reliable research on the subject and the fact that a 1 litre soft drinks bottle is made from 3 or 4 different kinds of plastic (bottom, middle, top and the lid) with no regulation before, during and after use does not help.  To the extent that a US multi decided that without any data or commitment from any government in the world to look at the subject, it was too much hassle and I went back to recycling tyres, which believe it or not, has a wealth of data to help in recycling.

My "son-in-law" (almost married, not quite) worked at a recycling place and said it was all rather difficult with some goods.  The example of bad manufacture was the Pringles container.  Really hard apparently.  Almost impossible to separate out.  Electronics was a gold mine.

Tyres I can understand being highly studied.  I think they mash them up and use them for road surfacing along with crushed glass.  Must be super hard wearing.  For the average punter, they are really hard to get rid of here.  The only way is to pay a recycling fee at the tyre fitting places when you get new ones.  It's not cheap!

BTW, we now have a recycling scheme where you get 50 HUF back on each of your used containers. It's an incentive to sort your plastic and metals out. From what I've seen, it's very popular and has made quite a difference.  We are now very careful sorters.   They have recycling units at Aldi, Tesco etc.  Automatic machines.  You get a voucher to use as credit against your purchases.

IDK if the water bottles have BPA or not.

That chemical can cause cancer!

I used to carry a huge water jug in my car in Vegas in the summertime;

Had to remember to remove it everyday and not let it heat up in the sun.

I would prefer glass water bottles but only a few high end mineral waters come in glass.

I try to switch my supply of water and keep it rotating so it does not get too old of settle in plastic too long.

I hate that new 50 forint per bottle thing.

We always crushed and tossed the old bottles in the recycling bins but now they are making me resent doing that.

I now have to bring in a huge bag of used bottles every week to Tesco.

Sometimes we have up to 1,200 worth of them at a time.

Not a person to toss out a few bucks but since I was already charged at check out for them; I feel forced to bring them back to the store.

A real drag for those without a car to lug in bags of bottles.

Our local Aldi is a mess now with lines of people returning bottles. No room left to pack up your shopping with 2 large machines up front of the store.

There used to be a few places in Budapest that would take recycled items like metals and paper but they are no longer in business.

Someone is making money on forcing us to return bottles.

So tired of being treated like a child by these corporations.

Recycling bring up a bad memory for me.

I was 9 and my brother only 3 when he got hurt.

We sometimes hung out with a 12 year old boy who would spend his weekends visiting his grandparents who lived near us. I used to watch their cats and water for them when they vacationed in Mexico for 2 weeks? Did that job 2 years running. I used to be a very responsible girl who was trusted like that.

Well; their grandson was not a good example of honesty.

One day he came up with the idea that we could get some mad money but taking glass bottles from outside the neighbors doors.

I was against it until he started up with all the candy etc. we could get.

We went with him as he grabbed a armfull of glass bottles; I did not want to look like a snitch so I took a couple bottles but told my brother to not touch them because I had enough to get him candy too.

Well, he did not listen to me, grabbed one glass bottle and started to run. Tripped and fell;

Loudest screams ever, blood going up 10 feet from his hand into the air.

He ran so fast i could not catch him.

Put the bottles down and followed him home;

My eldest sister wrapped his hand and our step dad got ready to take him to the ER. Mom was at work and was called home;

He cut an artery in his finger.

Took many yeas of exercise to be able to use his finger again, could not fold it or use it for ages.

Guess who got a spanking...

I never was one to get away with any crimes.

Yes, you're not wrong about the bottles.  The stupid thing is we put them in our car to take them back.  So we burn fuel getting there.  OK, we might be going there anyway but still.    There's a special bit they've added on to the supermarkets around here for them to deal with the plastic trash.

I wondered if the errant grandson had a life of crime later on. Habitual criminals view doing time as part of the job.  But it's a bit daft.   Their average earnings have to be more than a steady job to make it worthwhile (sort of).

Marilyn Tassy

Had 800 forints worth of bottles yesterday to return;

That is allot of empty bottles to store in the flat per week.

Not like we have allot of extra room just for bottles of empties.

I hate going into the shop looking like a bag lady!

I know allot of the Hungarian we knew in the US either had skills or turned to crime.

We stopped contact decades ago with most of them but have kept up through the grapevine with their lives;

Some were in jail in the US for years then deported while others are now living in luxury in Rose Hills in Budapest in their old age.

I am glad my husband fell into the group that had skills and worked without getting involved in ill legal activities.

We have a council run recycling scheme here in North Yorkshire - basically we have 4 x 360 litre bins:

  • Grey - general waste
  • Blue - for Plastics and Glass
  • Brown - Paper
  • Green - Garden waste

I think we have the 360 as a legacy when we had a lot more people living in our house, now it's just my wife and I, we normally only fill the bins half full and could probably get away with 240 litre bins.

We have to pay extra for the green bin and as my wife is green fingered, and we have a lot of flowers, we opted in for that.  The rest is included in our Council Tax (annual charge).

Anything else, we have to take to the nearest Council recycling centre (8 miles, 15 minute drive away).

We dump whatever into one bin, then the rubbish collectors sort it and sell anything of any value.

That includes plastic bottles and cardboard.

Poverty is a far more effective recycling system.

360L is massive.

I've just looked at our bins and they are both 120L.  One is for "rest" (anything you cannot classify) and another for paper/plastic.  We need bigger ones really but the new plastic regime might mean it's just about OK but we regularly filled it up before.  I complain about it to the others.

From what I hear, our collections is very different to the UK.  We pay separately and directly and it's not part of any council tax system.  We have collections of "rest" once a week, paper/plastic every 2 weeks, bio stuff (plant/leaves etc) every month with gaps because of the winter.

We have to attach stickers to the bio based bags to show we paid. It's about EUR 0.80 for a sticker and not more than 20kg a bag if I remember correctly.   We get 6 free stickers per year.  We usually use about 12 stickers as we have leaves from trees to dispose of.    That's even if we're enthusiastic at composting.

We can call the rubbish people and arrange for them to take free 2m3 worth of additional difficult rubbish like furniture.  That's only once a year.

Every 6 months, there's a "dangerous" materials collection.  We have to go to an open area and we can get rid of things like washing machines, electrical goods/wires/cables, wood and "dangerous" liquids like oil/paint but not building materials like rubble  This entire collection system is always a mystery because we never know when it's going to happen. We only find out randomly.  The local government does that and it's free - we usually have to show proof of address.  They use contractors to control the traffic and deal with these "dangerous" goods.  If we don't get rid of it here due to the mysterious arrangements, we can go to the MIL's village and use her proof of address.

SimCityAT

Our bins are:

  • Black -  General Rubbish (monthly)
  • Red - Paper and Cardboard (monthly)
  • Yellow bags - Plastic & Metal (monthly)
  • Brown bin - Garden and Food Waste (weekly summer/fortnightly winter)

We had to buy our brown bin, the reason we have it is because we have a garden, and sticking food waste in the normal bin just stinks it out, they are only collected once a month as the Bio bin is collected weekly during the summer and fortnightly during the winter.

We also have a waste Tip in the town.

As for bottles, I get my wine from a local wine tavern, and I just return them back.

My plastic bottles just go in the yellow sack. If I do get some beers in, they are returned back to the supermarket.

We are keen recyclers, our rubbish bin is always half full.

Oh we also have a paper shredder, the shreddings get donated to the Vets across the road.

That's a useful recycling aspect I hadn't considered.

We use our waste paper to start the wood burner.

But we often have too much of it so we have to throw some in to the fire just to reduce the amount

It's pretty horrible to say that about poverty but I'm afraid it's true.

But surely it doesn't always have to be like that.

The restoration of wetlands by removing the rubbish mountains in Colombo, Sri Lanka has been a great success.

It's also alleviated some poverty.

Gosh people in the UK seem allot more community minded then the people in Vegas.

My son had a house full of adults with about 5 new cars living next door to him.

They moved in a few years after he was leasing his home.

For a short time the granny lived with them and when I saw her, we would chat. After she moved out, all hell broke loose.

Not to be racist but they were all black people who would keep the garage door open , could see them sitting on couches inside and one could smell the pot in the air.

Long story short, they took my sons new garbage bins and replaced them with a couple of nasty old ones.

They also took over his one parking space in front of his home.

I was more then willing to talk to them about it but my son asked me not to.

He just decided to put up with it and move ASAP.

My son would get upset with me when I watered his lawn and got their cars wet by, Accident.

People have little respect for other peoples space.

It was a beautiful day outside. Had a nice walk about and cooked dinner.

IDK what most people make for dinner but I usually go wild.

Just a bit of this and that, everything must be fresh made or less then a few days old.

Made chicken soup for another day but dipped into it for a small bowl of steamy soup.

Fried up a rump steak in coconut oil with garlic, small serving of buckwheat, fresh made side of sweet beets, steamed broccoli, and a small amount of left over yellow squash.

I can no longer eat processed foods without going into a panic.

I find I am really enjoying cooking more now then ever.

Jumped into Lidl today to stock up on our morning avacados, wanted some tomatoes but at 1,200 per kilo, I passed on them.

Fall defo is here, the prices on fresh produce is going up and up.

Cynic

Waste collections in the UK have pretty much all been contracted out to private companies; it might say North Yorks Council on the side, but that's just part of the contract, the contractor also has to employ X amount of people wearing council uniforms, all transferred over on council T&Cs when the deal was done.  The same people also run the recycling centre where we have to take the gardening, fridge/freezers and other electrical wastes.  Infectious wastes are collected by the council and taken away for disposal by appropriate means.

fluffy2560

Mrs. Fluffy must be feeling very stressed out. Sorry, dealing with illness is stressful and having medical staff that drops the ball makes it worst.I know, had it happen many times with many people. They give the HPV vax free to those under age 15 here in Hungary; both sexes. They cut it off age age 45 because studies have shown that it is not effective after that age. Then again, some studies have shown it may work on different forms of HVP, different strains of the virus at any age.I was willing to pay for it but the medical run around was too much here;Asked my oncologist for it, he said it was too late? Then I asked my GP, she said only a gyno doc can make out the script.Went to one, she did an exam on me fist and chatted for a long time; Seemed she knew what she was doing but I was wrong; I picked up 2 types of bacterial infection due to her exam; Not sure if her assistant was the issue or what. Had to have 3 exams and saw not only her but a male gyno doc in the same clinic; He was an idiot!! He sent me to a surgeon!! The surgeon was confused and had no idea why I was sent to him; We did not know either but just followed orders!Had those 3 exams all within 4 weeks time; The lab work did not come back for a month and my infection was not treated until the lab results came back; I had some old anti biotics at home and was going to just start taking them on my own but decided to wait to see what they would give me; Turns out, they gave me the same meds I had at home!Went back to the female gyno doc for my HPV script after all that other business we being taken care of. She said she no longer could write me a script and to ask my oncologist for one!!Forget it, they do not know what they are doing!!!I know hard to follow this tale, confused me too! -@Marilyn Tassy

I am not sure what is going on but the buttons are not as expected.   The button for submitting an edit post says Edit now.

I didn't know that about the HPV vaccine.   Maybe it was our daughter we had to pay for and our son got it free.  Anyway, they are covered and that's the main thing.  It makes sense to do prevention rather than cure.

Update from the MIL.  Looks like she's malnourished which is odd as everyone going there was shoving food into her.  They put her on a drip  also to get her electrolytes right.  They don't understand why she's like seized up but it's probably a brain problem.  They know she's got dementia so that's "helpful" that they won't expect too much of her in the way of responsiveness.  She's got some bed sores despite having an oscillating air bed.  We had to supply that.  It's all a bit crap really.

Weather looks OK so might go walkies with the the doggy this arvo.  Got to get outside while the sun is shining and temperatures are half way decent.

Marilyn Tassy

Weather is nice, we took a walk around yesterday.

Crazy, we were about to take the bus near us but there were tons of those food delivery bikes parked on the sidewalk and a line of young men ,looked like about 100 or so.

My husband thought maybe Orban was giving out a hand out of something. All appeared to not be Hungarians but middle eastern men in their 20s or 30s.

Hogged the entire sidewalk so we took the subway instead.

He got lifted the other day on the bus by a group of 8 guys so not taking any chances again.

On the way home a bit later, the walkway was clear and the door to the building they were entering was chained and locked up.

I being the,brain, that I am had the bright idea as to why they were all lined up earlier. Time for prayers;

Just not something we are used to here.

I am sorry to hear about all the hospital stuff etc.

I have not heard from my brother for over a week. He did send me no less then 6 messages yesterday but IDK, all old messages he might of resent me by mistake.

I would rather not hear from him then to wonder if he is not thinking clearly and resent them by mistake.

His wife is not updating us either.  Makes me a bit upset.

It is hard to get enough nutrition for ill people. They tend to pick and chose foods that might not be exactly what their bodies need.

ATM; I swear I spend (mins each morning just sorting when suppliments we will be taking. Mixing this and that, some to take before breakfast, some with.

I know I must of allowed myself to get run down so I got that horrible virus and had to have cancer treatments.

At least a good 90% of the population has this virus in their systems but the body usually fights it off and no one is the wiser. Getting cancer from HPV is rather rare, lucky me!!

A good success rate of recovery but it also can get very bad and spread to major organs and can kill you.

I joined a online support group and many people have it bad, some have passed on and other have had major surgeries.

I am very, very blessed and very lucky to consider myself well, not saying cured, not yet, 2 more years to go for that statement. Do not need to jinx myself!

One thing I have learned to to not except everything they tell you. They wanted to do major surgery on me before I even knew what was what. I said no and walked out of the surgery clinic.

You always need time to think things over, never rush into any life changed events without looking at all sides first. If I had gone along with the doctors, I would hate my life right now. Now I am looking forward and not living in fear.

90% of the population, sort of scary that they do not tell you more about it then they do. Spend time forcing people to take vax,s that are not even tested but never tell much about a illness that can effect most of the population.

I have no idea where or how I even picked that virus up, silly to say but even from a public toilet from my research. Or even a handshake or full contact with an infected person.

Yes, my button says reply instead of the old way submit.

Has anyone heard of the new DAP registration rule?

I know HU gov. workers need to register into this new system by Oct;15th, tomorrow.

All digital and no more paper ID.

Just read about this a few days ago.

Not sure if and when the general public will be required  to do the same.

Big brother stuff.

Guess they want to start chipping people before 2030?

Sort of not cool. Some HU guy is making a killing but selling this new system to the gov.

What about hackers? Everything about you will be online , what safeguards will they have to protect your personal info?

I know recently in the US about 18,000 customers of B of A bank woke up to find they were whipped out with their savings accounts and some owed money. It was straighten out but still; heart attack time if you looked at your account that morning.

Hate to think the entire world is going communist China on us while we are distracted with Diddy and Netflix.

I don't know about the Diddy Man. Don't care about him so much as he's a ridiculous figure. The court case outcome will come out in the wash.

But I do know about Trump and Harris. Looks like someone was going to have another go at Trump but he didn't get very far due to his home made number plate on his car (WTF?). I am not sure anyone is trying to kill Harris - yet. If Trump loses, there will be a lot of disgruntled people.

I am reminded of the Stephen King book, "The Stand".  Synopsis is that an evil character/power arises which is going to cause the destruction of mankind and only a few can prevent that.   The action mainly takes place in LV.  Not sure who is the proxy for the evil character/power - it's either Trump or Putin.   Mrs F and I were musing one of them was the Anti-Christ.  Not that we believe in any of that but it's useful to have a model to compare to.  Usually we're thinking of these things as potential movie scripts or shows.

I looked at the DAP thing. It's for HU citizens, not for us evil foreigners. Well not yet. I cannot see them wanting me, as a foreigner to be in their phone app. My eyes are maybe too close together and if I tried harder, I could have a unibrow and I don't like Orban's politics. That confirms all evilness and I am bound to be rejected or followed about by the NKVD/KGB etc.

But I can see why they are doing it (usually sold on cost reduction) but as they'll potentially have your entire details accessible on your phone, it could mean a single point of failure for all ID documentation. Lose your phone, you no longer exist. They cannot hack your dumb unchipped address card if it's in your bag.  And besides, how much engagement and "cooperation" do people want with the state?

There's an article about a European bank called Revolut. People have lost huge amounts due to dodgy security protocols and lack of customer care.  There's a new law in the UK, fraud up to £85K is reimbursed in days. The losses are paid by the sending and receiving banks.  Just shows how interconnected it all is.  It could easily break someone if there aren't checks on this and that.

Every time I go to the doctor or a government building I have to take my eCard with me, I am not worried. All my information is stored somewhere, just like my bank account. Even my residency card,my details are stored somewhere. I've not heard of anything being hacked.

But come on, being chipped by 2030, that will never ever happen. You have watched to many Science Fiction films.

BTW, I read an article a way back on this kind of thing.

I forget the actual numbers but the proportions will be about right.

An in-person visit to a government window costs like $14, an online "visit" costs like $5 and an app is like less than $1.   No people needed except if there's a problem.  You can see where it's going.

I expect also the chipping not in 2030 but possibly later 2040 or 2050. It might not even need that.  It could be simply facial recognition, real time DNA sampling, eye scans and stuff like that will overtake that.  I did see at one point a technology that scanned the veins in your hands.  It's as good a signature as anything else.

I am seeing health monitoring RINGS are available on AliExpress.  It's easily foreseeable the technology could be extended to all sorts of other things.

I don't think it will matter to me as I might not be here although I was thinking of living to at least 120 physically assuming no Alzheimer's etc and then my consciousness being transferred to a sci-fi humanoid robot body.  I might take a brain transplant as well if it was available.

My husband was thinking of bringing  over some funds to his HU bank account from his US one.

Not going to do that, just  keep enough to get by on.

Their app is always acting up on us. Last time he noticed they had a $ sign in place when he was going to pay for something with forints.

Confusing, when he calls to talk with alive person, they always go over his personal details. he does not like putting his trust in some voice over the phone. How do we know they are not scammers themselves even if they work for the bank? How do we know they are not selling our info on the dark web?

Sad world when you can not trust anyone or anything.

An in-person visit to a government window costs like $14, an online "visit" costs like $5 and an app is like less than $1.  No people needed except if there's a problem. You can see where it's going.I expect also the chipping not in 2030 but possibly later 2040 or 2050. It's easily foreseeable the technology could be extended to all sorts of other things.I don't think it will matter to me as I might not be here although I was thinking of living to at least 120 physically assuming no Alzheimer's etc and then my consciousness being transferred to a sci-fi humanoid robot body. I might take a brain transplant as well if it was available.  -@fluffy2560

I will never let them chip me even if I live to be 100.

Might not be able to buy or sell though!

@Marilyn TassyEvery time I go to the doctor or a government building I have to take my eCard with me, I am not worried. All my information is stored somewhere, just like my bank account. I'm going through British Movies of the 1940s-70s on Netflix.

There are many old films there but they don't show those upfront unless you search.

Netflix is always trying to ram new content down your throat but there's no substitute for a lazy and preferably rainy afternoon with a classic old movie.

I watch Tubitv.com using a VPN with set to the UK or USA. Loads on there. They hope to make it available for the EU very soon.

fluffy2560

My husband was thinking of bringing over some funds to his HU bank account from his US one.Not going to do that, just keep enough to get by on.Their app is always acting up on us. Last time he noticed they had a $ sign in place when he was going to pay for something with forints.Confusing, when he calls to talk with alive person, they always go over his personal details. he does not like putting his trust in some voice over the phone. How do we know they are not scammers themselves even if they work for the bank? How do we know they are not selling our info on the dark web?Sad world when you can not trust anyone or anything. -@Marilyn Tassy

I hardly ever speak to anyone at the bank. It's all online.  I use my fingerprints to authenticate myself.  I had cause to talk to them this morning but I only do it by secure chat within an app.

I do get spam callers trying it on.  That's a fairly recent event. It seems to be tied into numbers being shown on WhatsApp. It's already a massive security problem.  I've recently had calls coming up as being from Iraq.  My phone is a Samsung and it puts a tag on the call to say the calling number is a known scam calling number.  It's a bit dumb as it says "Smart" for scam callers and not "scam".  Weird thinking.  If I get these silent calls, I block the numbers.  But it's a bit stupid as it's really easy to fake caller ID.

I don't take calls from any bank. I always say, send me a secure message or e-mail.  I don't tell them my e-mail address as they should always know.  So it's:

Them:  "Blah-blah, error on your account..." or something stupid

Me: "send me an e-mail"

Them: "what's your e-mail address?"

Me: "you should know that, adios scammer scumbag".

I am extremely cautious but even I have been caught out with fake e-mails.  I've never lost any money but I've been close to believing some scam e-mails.   Big giveaway are e-mails not addressing me by name but some general BS like "Dear Customer" instead of "Dear Cat Meister Fluffy".

I think it's assume the worst, hope for the best and always be sceptical.

Oh I dunno, sci-fi movies predict the future.  Star Trek predicted so many things like mobile phones and tablets and bluetooth earphones.  You've got to appreciate the talents of writers and their imagination.  And it does produce some interesting questions.

There's a show called Altered Carbon (on Netflix but cancelled by the idiots).  In that show, people can have different bodies or "sleeves" to contain their consciousness.  Bit like Dr Who but more mechanical.

This is obviously linked to what I said before but we're having a discussion (still) about if my MIL can recognise herself in the mirror.   Very few animals can recognise themselves in mirrors.  Apes, crows and humans can.

But really what's it like to see someone different in the mirror to what one expects?

There's a Rock Hudson movie like that as well.  It's called Seconds.  Might be on Netflix.

It's beyond obvious that you don't give out security codes of any sort. Doing it three times is stupidity.

The bank should not return his money as the security failings were 100% the customer's fault.

He claims the scammers were able to bypass the security features on the app etc and there was no way to contact the bank except via a chat message.  So it's not clear cut that he didn't try and stop it. Moreover the bank should have had automatic systems in place to notice many transactions occurring rapidly.

In any case, there's a UK law change where the scammed amount liability in the case of fraud is down to the receiving and sending banks 50-50 up to a limit of something like £85K.

I've got deja-vu. I am sure I typed this message this morning in response to another posting.

It's on the BBC TV show Panorama so there will be more details in that programme (downloadable or VPN etc).

I recall a time when people had to stand the consequences of their actions.

In this case, the man gave his codes away to scammers.

I think we need to see the Panorama episode to pass judgement. It's downloadable. I'll watch it tomorrow.

From the BBC article, he recognised that something was wrong but was not able to contact the bank quickly who would only respond by chat.  That is ridiculous and they should bear some of the guilt.

I wouldn't be surprised if it forces the provision of an emergency telephone number for scam reporting/account freezing.

Article also says Revolut has a very aggressive culture which neglects customer care.  Complaints against Revolut exceed other banks considerably.

No episode required - He admitted giving the scammers his security codes - 3 of them.

Poor customer service is an issue. That's a downside of online only banking.

I have a local version of the same. It has a virtual card I use for Internet transactions. I put in what I need but not a penny more.

If it's a scammer, they get one payment (my problem for not spotting it)

If a site is hacked, the hackers get nothing as there's nothing to take.

The idea of an emergency number is good, but my app allows me to freeze a card or the whole account without having to talk to anyone.

Does this demi-bank have the same?

This case is simple. He gave away the codes banks tell you not to give to anyone.

I get calls from HSBC on occasion. I refuse to talk to them past getting their name and department.

I tell them I will call back on the number I have for the bank.

To get me, they would have to be a corrupt employee, or hack the bank's telephone system.

Every site I use (Google, whatever) has a false date of birth, and I never put payment details on sites (except the virtual card).

As for my phones, the only apps on them are official  apps. No games, porn, gambling, or any other apps that run the risk of carrying a payload.

SMS scams are blocked, as are sales messages.

I never give out personal details on social media. The only site I use that shows an email has an address I created especially for that site.

A little care is all it takes. As for giving out codes, only a blithering idiot would do that.

Need help? here’s what to do

I’ve spotted a suspicious transaction

If you’re concerned your card has been compromised, freeze your card immediately. If you believe your account has been used fraudulently, fill out a chargeback form and we’ll help you resolve the issue.

It appear the dumbo failed to block his card using the app.

Not giving the scammers his code, and not blocking his card, meant they ripped him off when he could have been safe.

I repeat my assertion he's a fool

I am sure you are taking all precautions.  Thanks for telling us about them.  It's overkill to say they were blithering idiots.  No-one is perfect.

I watched the episode and it describes how Revolut had faults in their facial recognition software which they have now apparently fixed.  A professor shows how it was possible to substitute a static social media picture of a person into an application which would be readily accepted by the application for facial recognition. One victim said he never provided that method of accessing his account.

It does also say that some victims were foolish enough to download applications which gave the scammers control over their computers and they gave out their OTP (One Time Passwords) that appeared on their phones.  It seems like these were quite sophisticated attacks compared to the level of technology knowledge of the victims.  Not everyone can be an expert and anyone designing these systems has to work on the basis that the user is not tech savvy.  The scam caller could easily sound plausible to someone not up on current scam techniques.   There was a recording of the scam taking place - the victim recorded automatically all incoming calls.

Anyway, it seems like the implication is that Revolut is more concerned about growing the brand than actually tackling these kinds of scam attacks.   One contributor said that the Police are not surprised that a reported scam/theft involves Revolut.

The new legislation protection is up to £85K but the original proposal was for £415K.  So it's been really watered down.  That's quite concerning.

We don't know the final outcome of some of the claims against Revolut as the cases are with the authorities.

Like I said, I expect they'll be implementing a special fraud line.   They have to address it.

Fred

Only a blithering idiot would give away security codes, and only a steaming twit would fail to cancel the card.

Of course they are. That's what businesses do.

That brings us to the next question.

Why would this 'business man use a crap bank?

What's missing? We aren't being told something.

Stand down Fred. Take a moment to read things again.  Or better, look at Panorama and be better informed.

The article's main victim could not contact Revolut as there's no phone number.  It's only possible to contact them via their compromised app and a chat application.  It took him 20m to get someone at Revolut to react.  And he couldn't freeze the account via the app as despite trying,  it's apparently hard to do via the app.  And in that 20m, they had emptied his account.

I know people who use Revolut and I didn't hear any complaints from them.  I considered it myself as it has multi-currency possibilities.  I did not reject them for their security failings but because I just couldn't be bothered to change.  Would I consider them now?  No, definitely not.

I think I'll give up discussing this now if it involves terms like blithering idiots or similar.  It's not adding value to the discussion.

Fred

Stand down Fred. Take a moment to read things again.

No need. He admits giving them all the information needed to steal his money.

He wouldn't need to contact his bank if he'd used a brain cell.

To all intents and purposes, it's the same as giving them his card and PIN.

That isn't to defend this demi-bank, just to say their customer was stupid.
