DPD is a low or lack of an enzyme in the liver. Called DPD deficiency.

Not to be confused with mental DPD,Dependant personality disorder!

Hmm; maybe I suffer from both forms of DPD? Should look into it!

Cynic

We have the eCard in Austria, it has your insurance number on it, photo and a chip. The chip stores all your information on it, you need to see the doctor it has your details.I went to the eye doctor last Wednesday, I hadn't been in 5 years for a check up and they knew all my details. It also has my EHIC on the rear. It's an excellent system.  - @SimCityAT

If you turn up at a hospital or GP with no ID or e-Card, will you be treated or turned away regardless of the seriousness of your health needs? - @fluffy2560

Just asked Mrs C what would happen at her surgery if someone (anybody) presented and weren't registered; they'd be sent to the chemist/ A&E

fluffy2560

All my cancer treatments were covered in Hungary with my TAJ.
Weird thing is they did not test me first for DPD; A genetic thing that no one would know they have unless they were given 5 FU type of chemo drugs. The liver can not process the drug and it can possibly kill you.
My luck is I am one of the rare people who are allergic to 5 FU.
WBC dropped so low they had to isolate me for my own protection from others.
I barely remember those days, living in a serious mental daze for months afterwards.
Long story but I had to get daily shots in hospital to counter act the chemo drugs;
I had to buy my shots before being admitted into hospital!
You would think out of all drugs given, one to safe your live would be covered!
Was not too expensive here, but the idea of it is disturbing.
Also in most countries it is illegal to give chemo drugs without first testing for a bad reaction. Test costs between $100; to $150. I would of paid out of pocket if I was told about it.
Would of saved allot of hassle and money that was spent on getting me better.
Scary thing is some unfortunate people actually die with their first dose of 5 FU, I had 5 before I crashed. - @Marilyn Tassy

That doesn't sound good.  It sounds like someone is in charge who doesn't actually know what they are doing.

At least your treatment was covered by the TAJ.  If you'd been in the USA, you might have got better treatment overall but you'd probably be facing a large bill.

In the US they defo would of tested me before pumping me full of poison.

My brother was tested before they started on his treatments.

In many countries, France and  I  do believe the UK it is illegal to get chemo before being tested.

Hungary seems a bit backwards.

I have learned to read up on everything before signing the dotted line. I did not want chemo to begin with, wish I had listen to my gut more.

Marilyn Tassy

As far as bills, well the treatments cost so much that I am pretty sure we would qualify for free care under medicare in combo with social services. They also have patient advocates that work to get bills lowered to an affordable amount depending on your income.

Just have to jump through allot of hoops.

As someone brought up in a system where healthcare was always free (prescription costs depend), I find it very difficult to accept a different system where financial means has any bearing on treatment.  It's very unusual to have that kind of system in a developed country.  I often read deranged comments about public healthcare in "socialist" countries in places like Quora and the amount of misinformation circulating is outrageous. It's a parallel universe down a rabbit hole in some online forums. So far I've not been suckered into some fake news.  OK, maybe once or twice (I think).

But on the other hand I've been to countries where things are worse.  Even emergency treatment is hard to reach in some places. I always think twice about where I go now I'm 60+.  The worst case I heard of from a colleague in the Caribbean was his sister dying of tetanus.  That's a disease us Westerners are routinely vaccinated against during childhood.  This really  stuck in my mind that there were people who could die of these diseases that are virtually unknown in First World.  I now rigorously keep on top of my vaccinations just to make sure.  Prevention is surely better than cure.

Health care and life in general in the US is set up for the rich or the poor;

Anyone in the middle is pretty much hung out to dry.

Once you rise to middle class the rest of your life is a battle to stay there.

It will be interesting to see who is elected on Nov.4th, think it is the 4th?

Either way, same old same old, nothing changes that actually helps the average citizen.

And yet the middle classes are seen as a bulwark of the US economy - all those Mom and Pop stores.   I worked on a project once in a post-conflict country and that was the US government philosophy. Create a middle class and they won't go to war with their neighbours as there's too much to lose.   But the US healthcare systems makes it seem like someone's life is a commodity to be traded and has value.  Grandma living in a shack in Arkansas is worth nothing but the likes of some rich person in a mansion has higher worth. I find that difficult to take they wouldn't get equal treatment in a public only healthcare system.

I'm watching the US elections with some interest.  It seems to be an even split.   Trump and his proxies like Musk or even Harris aren't going to be able to change things that much.  It's a supertanker that takes miles to stop or change direction.  Some policies are looking like madness and those folks put their foot in it every time they open their mouths.  His sycophants are hard to fathom.  I guess they are in the cult.

BTW, I've been to the island of garbage (aka Puerto Rico) and it was very nice.

Over here we fear Trump cutting out NATO and abandoning Ukraine. I don't think  he can really do these things.  He'd be insane to carry out all the BS he spouts. People will not cooperate and he'll never get all of his people to agree.  Hopefully they'll block him.   What he really wants is to pardon himself for his Federal cases.  He's just an ultimate user.    If he loses, we'll never hear from him again and the divisive MAGA movement.  Fingers crossed he drops into obscurity.

Harris seems weak but she's at least promising stability and continuity.   She looks more presidential day by day but hasn't quite conquered it yet as far as I can see.  For her, we know NATO will continue, Ukraine will be supported and there won't be tariffs.  And Schwarzenegger is promoting Harris.  I never thought I'd see that from The Terminator.

Talked my husband into purchasing me some beauty items I wanted. Discovered it is the Day of the Dead.Almost all the shops are closed today.

I always forget about this day.

The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, may be included depending on the locality. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and remember friends and family members who have died.

Yup, Dia de Los Meurtos indeed.

It's a big thing here in HU usually but the cemeteries seem to be less visited this year. Probably lack of funds to plant flowers and light candles.

Shame really as it's one tradition here I rather like. We don't have that in the UK. Shame. It's a bit disrespectful not to go. Its only once a year.

I doubt anyone in my family has made the trip to see my Mum and Dad and brother.  Including me! 😞

In Holland, they have "Doden Herdenking" on 4th May - translated in English to "Think of the dead".

It's their Remembrance Day for their NL war dead. This one here in Hungary is for everyone.  We have a Commonwealth Cemetery nearby (Solymar), mostly air crew but some others.  This year it's on Sunday 10th November.  I'll have a UK visitor that day so I'll have someone to go with.  Often it's just me.  I asked the kids to come to remember at least their grandfather's service.  We'll see if they feel they like they should.

We've done the main Mrs F cemetery around here.  There must be about 5 or 6 of them in that cemetery, the earliest departure was 1961 so Mrs F wasn't even born then so didn't know that one.  The rest of them I knew. Not well.  But I knew them.

There were many candles and it looked really pretty. Looks like with the dark coming early many people had come to do their flowers and candles at the first darkness.  We were there 19.30h and it looked a bit empty, just a few stragglers.   Only time we ever go there so we won't be there again this year (unless my MIL passes).

It was getting a bit chilly.  I think we'll have to wear more clothes soon if we're out at night.

I get it but since I have lost so many people, I would rather count the ones still living as they are less then the ones gone on.

My friend in Vegas who lost her husband about a month ago is having a time of it.

She is independant, strong, can handle herself.

She owns and operates 2 businesses, one is the Las Vegas Arts and Craft Shows.

She however posts daily her messages to her deceased husband. Writes and shares with her friends her inner feeling etc;

Really sad how much she is torn apart.

She is a pro , was again on the local news promoting her show, smiling away while we who know her understand she was crying inside.

I think of the dead everyday, not just one day a year. Miss them all.

I know what you mean. Up until my brother died of cancer I hadn't really experienced a lot of loss. Past 5 years my Mum and Dad have gone so more stuff to make me face up to reality.

We're just a few km from Romania. We've just done the Mrs F grandparents graves tidying and now we're on the way to do an aunt who died young. Really a shame. She left 3 young kids. Pancreatic cancer I think.  She was nice.

I guess your friend is trooper. For her, the show must go on. Admirable really. Good for her.

Marilyn Tassy

Yes, one never knows when their number is up.

Sorry to hear about the auntie was died young.

I also have one of those. My father was the eldest of 8 and his baby sister, the youngest died at 26 from our curse, colon cancer.

She had a toddler son and died just 10 days after giving birth to her daughter

Giving life as you die. sad thing is that daughter also died young from colon cancer.

I was given her engagement ring.

From what I know she was like most of the Ruysn side, sort of care free and open minded.

My father never said much about the baby sister, he would just tear up and not say a word.

Such is life.

So my mentally challenged half sister is going to a new doctor inn a few days.

My eldest sister wrote out a very nice to then point letter to him;

She asked him to check the younger one out for depression.

Getting to be way too much for the eldest to care for then youngest.

2 months in and she has only done one job app and never followed up on it.

Owes the older one money and even has the nerve to ask for more!

I am sorry, told the eldest to just get on with it and follow her own plans. Easy to say but what else can she do?

Had a chat with my SIL this morning, early hours for her in Ca. Hard for her to sleep all night through.

My bro seems to be getting better, the sepsis in his spine is reducing. His leg looks good so they will fit him for a new one soon.

I  hope he goes home before the holidays but who knows?

I wish to scream to younger people to not put off their dreams till retirement time because they just might not live that long.

Nice outside today although the wind was picking up.

Forgot that yesterday the shops were closed so today we had to run out for supplies.

I do try to have enough to get by one for at least a month or more but my vino supply was getting low!

Plus one always needs fresh produce and bread.

I watched a sweet movie yesterday and had my hubby check it out today.

Stared Albert Finney so it had to be good.

An oldie but goodie. A Rather English Marriage.  I thought it was really good ; my HU husband could only focus on the ending where two old dudes are dancing. IDK, the HU mentality is always a big different then how we see things as those being raised in the west. Still it makes for some fun conversations!

Marilyn Tassy

Engagement rings, I got 2 of them from deceased relations;

Sort of creepy but I will take them!

My husband told me years ago that I was part owner of a lathe machine     and that getting a diamond ring was stupid.

For a moment I thought the edit was working on my post, na, no such luck.

Funny, my husband said he saw this too.

Not sure we are part of the same branch or not.

Looked in the national archives over a decade ago.

Not easy to look up the information, most people doing research seemed to be professionals doing research.

They let us in but gave zero help with figuring out the computer system.

My husband was able to get in and find some info but took so long that he did a rush job .

Found out the Tassy,s had 2 clans . I know we found one ancestor was the personal physician to one of the Kings of Hungary, middle ages? Another was so well respected for being all business and honest that he was viceroy of Hungary, the one who stepped in for the King when he was on a campaign, or taking a break hunting etc.

Another was high up in the church;

I am sure they must of had a few black sheep as well, who does not!

Somewhere we did copy down the Tassy motto written in Latin.

My SIL and BIL told us they saw the family Dog Tags, some leather bound statement of them being noble people and land owners. Probably lost it all in the wars because  they only thing royal acting about most of the Tassy,s I know is their high flaunting attitude! My SIL and neices sure come to mind, royal pains in the bottom!

Marilyn Tassy

Such a big secret about those Dog Tags, I guess in the commie days, it was totally illegal to have such a thing in hand.

I know my MIL had a photo of her father on a horse in his police officers uniform from the 1930;s which they kept behind another picture.

Mrs F tells me there's a letter in the National Museum which has her ancient family name on it.  No-one has ever opened the envelope and no-one knows what it says on the letter inside.  It's got a seal on it and it's really fragile so would fall to bits if they opened it. I was always joking it was probably a receipt for "dry cleaning" or a shopping list or a recipe for francia kremes.   They could X-ray it and then they'd be able to decode what it says.  It's probably not that significant.

I suppose hiding the photo behind another picture was needed in those times.   Could have been dangerous in those times to be associated with any particular regime.   We were down at one of the cemeteries and back to great great grandparents grave from the mid-1800s and the inscriptions were entirely in German and all the names are German.  I know Mrs F's maternal family had to change their name in the 1900s.   They were Germans and it wasn't a good thing to be German back then.  I looked around at the other graves and German names abound.  They didn't change their names so I don't know why Mrs F's family did it.   I've got photos of all the graves now and I'm going to upload to various sites people use for family tree research - findagrave.com.   It's really valuable data.

I've also received a photo of one of my ancestors' graves in the North of England and it's all fallen down.  It's my great grandmother and others.   Now I have to decide if I should try and jolly up my relatives to get the thing fixed up a bit - new foundation and reattach the headstone which has fallen off or been removed.   I'm not expecting any help at all from others.   I've never seen this headstone.  I am going to the UK in a month to see my daughter and I thought I'd take a side trip to check out that graveyard, gather some photos as the wording cannot be read properly.

Marilyn Tassy

Believe it or not, my husband saw at the National Archives that his family also has a very old letter sealed with sealing wax that has never been opened.

Maybe it is an old IRS bill!!

I have the family motto somewhere written down, obviously it is not a top priority for us otherwise it would be framed.

We also saw 2 different family crests in their records.

Could not take photos, against the rules at the archives. Too bad really. One was a boat with a swan as the main focus and the other was more serious, the typical dragon and roses type.

My husband has always tried to instill a bit of family honor in our son. Always told him that they lost it all but still have their good name. To be honest and truthful at all times etc.

IDK,think it went in one ear and out the other with him!

Speaking of names, after WW2 my FIL, my husband father,was called into the police station;

Sat him down and asked him who the heck he thought he was with such a ,fancy? name. He was taken aback since the family always spelled their surname with the double ss and y ending.

They wante dhim to change the spelling for the new commie equal class social experiment.

Change it to Tasi.

He would not hear of it;$He went all over Hungary, to city halls, record buildings, church records, everywhere to prove the spelling was always in the family since records were kept.

I gues at one point in time some people who came into wealth would purchase a so called, fancy, name. He was able to prove they always had that name and surprise, they allowed him to keep the spelling.

I am not expert of HU spelling but heard that anyone with a ssy in thei name at the end was a nobleman , knight in the past. The ssy could only be used with the blessing of the King.

Interesting, from high and mighty to refugee!

I know my FIL grew up before the war in a big house with servants and drove his own fancy car. Carefree, would spend his days at the men,s social club drinking brandy and reading the papers.

Problem was post war when all was lost, he still went to men,s social clubs and drank brandy instead of working.

MIL had to divorce him. Later he remarried a Jewish lady and had a daughter with her. He never could really settle into a real job, a 9 to 5 er. He stopped drinking and became a private driver who was paid to travel around Hungary driving some official and being able to spend his working days in different hotels, eating out and reading the papers when not driving around.

I met him only once in 1978. Visited him and his new family one evening. My husband and my son and I just showed up with no warning. He was already in bed. Got up to chat with us, had tea and snacks. He was so full of himself that when we left he walked us out to the st; He was rocking a nightgown to his ankles and an actual sleeping cap.He wore it like it was a coronation robe with crown. Funny old dude!

My MIL came from a working class family, no idea how those two ever hooked up. My MIL was a beauty in her youth though. I saw a photo of her when she was 20 or so. I had to ask who it was because all those hard years really took a toll on her looks.

Most of this family history my husband discovered later in life.

His father did not dare speak of it and his mom could not care less.

All they needed was a child over sharing in school to find the entire family in a re education camp.

It was the same for Mrs F as her parents were teachers.

Mrs F got involved in a church youth club and her parents told her to no longer go there because they'd lose their jobs if anyone in authority found out.   Commies didn't want anyone having an alternative belief system that could challenge them.

The stupid thing is that everyone just learnt to milk the system or survive within it.   That's where communism had a fatal flaw - doesn't take into account people are human beings and will always find a way around an official blockage or obstacle.  And that people will engage in "corruption" at all levels and for all sorts of reasons.  Communism was and is always doomed.

Hard for anyone not born into those system to believe such things went on.

Marilyn Tassy

When my husband was a young new machinist he was offered by a young commie group to start his own rock band. They would buy the equipment and take care of everything.

It was brought up to him at work because he was a super funny, popular guy who looked the part with his longer hair etc.

Did not matter that he did not sing or play, he had the look.

They wanted to attract more young people to join the party and thought having their own rock band would do the trick;

He said no, now he says who knows, he might of been the next Omega or Ellis!

At his factory they had a few young commie guys who were always being excused from work for party business.

Rock n Roll Communists. Jeez.

Mrs F was in trouble for insulting the office commissars.   She has a story she told someone they were an idiot or something.

They guy said, "Are you insulting me or my position as commissar?".

Well, you can imagine, calling the person an idiot was OK (haha) but commissar would be an instant problem of unimaginable consequences!   So she said, "No, you're the idiot".  Quite obvious that he really was the idiot.

It's just hard to imagine the stupidity of such a system.  And why the hell did people buy into it?  Utterly ridiculous!

She was also told that if she joined the party, she'd be promoted.  And that was by a big boss. What the boss was saying was they'd get her special privileges.  But she ain't stupid, knowing what kind of kickbacks would be needed to maintain that privilege.

Of course, the entire edifice came down in 1989.  Yet some people were committed to it to the end, even in the face of it falling down around their ears.  It's bonkers.  How they reconciled that they were all lied to their entire lives and it was a con job is just hard to fathom.  You'd think their heads would implode!

Marilyn Tassy

And yest, many now days who boast about their properties, cars, etc; had their wealth pretty much handed to them because they or someone in the family was in the party.

My husband said their was one guy who was into sports at his job. he was a party member and might come into work once every few weeks. The gave him the easiest work to do because he did not know what he was doing in a machine shop.

He was always excused for sports training and party meetings.

Only free day my husband ever got was when they asked for blood donations at work.

You worked only a half day, got a beer and hot dog and were paid for a full day of work.

Literally cost your blood to get a half day off work!

The good thing I heard however is it was easy enough to quit a job because they would hook you up with another one the next day.

I know most of those old timer HU rock bands were supported by the party. Their songs had to be approved first.

My husband could not sell his soul for rock and roll!

There actually is a video online, U tube titled, They Sold Their Souls for Rock and Roll. Interesting documentary.

As far as we know, it looks like the Orange man won the US election.

I had a feeling that would happen.

I also have a feeling he may not get to lead for his full term...

Hope I am wrong, do not want harm to come to anyone.

The money exchange rates for dollars and Euros is high today, went up several forints almost over night.

Guess that only means more inflation here?

So yesterday we went over for my medical check up.

Walked in and the clinic seemed not very busy.

I was told at the desk that my doctor, the professor of the clinic was not in. I know is is not in on Fridays but he took Thursday off.

Some sort of convention he was attending.

I told her it was OK to see someone else under him just for the check up.

Surprize, no surprize we sat for over 2 hours to get in for my 3 min chat with a doctor.

A older white haired lady looked over my test results.

Said it looked clear but, always the but, she said I should get another test in 6 months because it can always return!

Not the positive news I ever want to hear! I was hoping it would be at least another year.

I suppose my own doctor might of said different but she was staying on the safe side.

On our way over, we noticed so much traffic, the entire city was extra busy.

Ambulances going on several different areas across town.

Military people in uniform on our tram, police all over, traffic being re routed and many black official cars in groups with motorbike offices with them.

Seems Orban invited his gang of buddies here from Brussels.

Then I got to thinking about where my professor actually was. Maybe it was a big day of lodge meetings and nothing to do with the latest tests and studies on new treatments with his doctor buddies.

Guess the new elections in the US have a few members in Brussels rethinking the future?

Yes, the European Political Community are having a kerfuffle in Budapest.  46 country leaders are in town.  And yes, Trump is on the agenda.   That guy is going to give away Ukraine to Russia.  No wonder Putin is congratulating his proxy.  I saw Bob Woodward (yes, Watergate guy) and he said Putin has Kompromat on Trump.  Putin's a professional and Trump is his patsy.

Talk about bad timing for us.  My eldest is over from the UK and it's blocking up the city with road closures.  We're going to town this afternoon so we cannot park easily so we're planning to go on the bus.

The buses and trams and subway were busier then usual yesterday.

Hope your travels are easy today.

We are staying in today, yesterday was too much;

I watched Trumps acceptance speech the other night.

Apparently NC had some, big water, some very big water!

I do get a kick out of they way he speaks, like we are all as dumb as rocks.

Today is 10th November 2024 and it's Remembrance Sunday.

The usual ceremony will take place at Solymar Commonwealth War Cemetery.

For those who wish to attend it starts 10.55h for 11h 2 minute silence and then the laying of wreaths.

Parking is in Auchan's car park at the far end then a short walk.

Yes saw that. Not good.

There's another story about Amsterdam police putting up a hologram of a murdered HU teenager in the red light district.

Update:

We were at the Remembrance Day service and it was well attended. Maybe 50 or 60 people including dignitaries.

Someone didn't turn up as there was one wreath left over. One of the other diplomats placed it.

Oh no. I just read the link.

Disgusting and sad.

Too bad she did not tell her friends what was going on before she went off with a nutter stranger.

People sometimes drop their guard when on holiday and really it is the time to be on guard.

Hope he serves time in a Hungarian prison, he will be so very sorry, and sore!
