If you want to get really geeky or wonkish about firewood, go to the woodshed at hearth.com. Yeah, I am a forum member there too. ;)

I'm already geeky about so many other things I'm all geek'd out.

I just want the KPIs - the types of wood, kg/hour burn and kW/kg.

II usually work on 2-3kg per hour burn on background "holding heat".

Chestnut (Bukk), Cser (Turkish Oak) and Black Locust ("white Acacia") should all give about that and are the most common fire woods in Hungary. The oak gives a bit more heat than the others if very dry*, but I prefer Black Locust as it is an introduced species, and should be cut out, unlike native Chestnut. Heat output form the three is close enough for the non-geekish types to call close enough as in horse shoes and hand grenades. I don't know the wood mix that the "Big Box Stores" sell. I order myself by species in mass.

*The wood burning geekish types describe their burns by wood types. But that gets quickly a bit wonkish. :)

God, I hope it was satire because I wanted to go virtual and kick that dudes Butt!
Sometimes it really is bad in Budapest when you can smell someone is burning bad wood, maybe something painted in lead.
In S. Ca. we , well mostly I torn down a old wood fence before the builders arrived to put up a new block wall around the outside of our home.
We tied the old wooden slates up for the trash man but my husband got the "big idea" of burning some in our living room fireplace ( fireplace in S. Ca. does happen)
Holy cow, the old paint was also burning away. Had to open every window in the house and turn on the A/C to flush the smoke out!
My husband told me back in the old commie days some low income people would be given new nice flats for their families. These people were so cheap that they actually tore up the nice new wooden floors in their flats to burn for firewood!
Guess some folks are not really worth the gov. handouts.

Never heard it called Black Locust before.

As we're urban types, they say at Obi/Bauhaus/Praktiker etc that it's got a mix in it - listed as oak, acacia, beech, hornbeam, maple and ash.  It looks clean stuff but how long it has been drying who knows.  I don't think it's oak really - easy to tell that wood.   It'll be the cheapest stuff for sure.  I think nearly almost all of it is imported from further East.   Weight wise on the big box store wood they say 25% of the mass would be water and 50% volume loss from stacking.  That's quite bad in my mind.

Now it's all sunny.  Make your mind up weather!!!

GuestPoster279

It is a USA native species. That is its common name there. It is not even an "Acacia". That is the reason for the specific epithet: "pseudoacacia" (i.e. "false acacia").

Yes, those are the obvious signs this is a really well done satire. I always assume there were the cues for any thinking person to start laughing and admiring how well it was all done.

But.... I have shown this video to some people who still believe this is real. They think that hipsters, liberals, etc are actually like that. I even show them the This Is That Wikipedia page and they still want to belief it is real. Some people are weird.  And it really shows the polarization, cognitive dissonance, willful ignorance, and just basic bad will towards others that may think differently than "them", that makes up so much of the world today..... :(

Indeed when I read the documentation on the water content and even worse, the space/wood factor,  I thought it was taking the mickey.  The water can be dried out after some time but the space/wood gap harder to overcome. I'd have thought 70% wood/space ratio but 50% is a bit much.

Optimistically at 70%, they sell wood in "cubes" stated as either 1m3 or 1.7m3 which would be 0.7 or 1.2m3 actual wood.

Taking say best case, 700kg/m3 as an average density figure for various woods, then you've only got 490kg or 840kg in those "cubes" they sell.

I used to work on 4 tonnes of wood for the winter in my Austrian house and gas for main heating but I suppose if I was on wood full time, I'd need perhaps 8-10 tonnes.

Mrs Fluffy and I are working on having some delivered probably need week. I think we'll just get 4 x 1m3 and that's 2 tonnes.  Not a great deal.

Wow, dreadlocks on a white person might be called "cultural appropriation".  I'm not sure if that's really a good representation of what is going on.  I want a totem pole in my garden but really I want a piece of art of a similar nature. Maybe it could be supportive and respectful if done tastefully and correctly.

I've got an interest in modern art but I twiddling my thumbs at my desk, I was thinking it's like wanting a tan might be pushed by some as being racist in a cultural appropriation kind of way.

I mean, Donald T would be then be accused of carrrotism as he's a strange orange colour.   OV might be even accused of a-hole'ism as he's giving a-holes a bad (or worse) name.

Ok, maybe that's a little too far, but both Donald T and OV are fair game for the butt of bad jokes.

Marilyn Tassy

Yes, "The Donald" is a very odd shade of orange, plus he
seems to wear white undereye cover up cream.
You'd think with all his money he could at least get his tan to look "human".
I know I have some"red skin" DNA but I've never seen anyone orange in any of my travels anywhere.
I actually only saw 2 native men in New Mexico that I would actually say were Red  in skin tone, I think they both were 3 sheets to the wind though, that would make anyone's face flush.

Very small world at times.
Today while walking home from the farmers market I noticed two lost looking young ladies sitting on the steps of a church with a map out and a cell phone.
Started to pass them but they really looked lost.
I asked if I could help direct them, they said yes.
I had to say OK then where do you want to go? Yes, I guess they thought I could read their minds.
Funny enough I know the hostel they wanted to find.
I gave them some general directions since they knew the st. etc. Just were a good 15 blocks or so off course.
I only knew that hostel because just 3 weeks ago I met a ex-pat lady from the US who happened to be staying there.
Otherwise I would of had no clue where they were going either.
They must of thought me half crazed because I said, I know that place, was just here 3 weeks ago but let me think again how to get there. I mentioned we had gone by car last time which really is different way of getting anywhere with one way sts. etc.
I told them too that the place smelled like bug spray and to not walk around there at night since the hostel was OK but the hood was bad. They were German girls I think and just thanked me but looked more confused after my aid then they had looked before I tried to help out.
I suppose I could of skipped the details on the bug spray smell and bad hood... Oh well, I like to give the full picture, I later thought I should of walked them down the st. a bit to make sure I had no overly confused them.

I don't think Native Americans are actually red (are they?).

There's a quick tan product which contains the same chemical that gives carrots their orange colour.  He must be taking that as that's the only thing which explains the strange hue.

Not so good.

I am not looking forward to that long November/December/January cold.

We haven't had the heating on but we're mega insulated. Not passive but close.  We probably will make it another 1-2 weeks before putting on the heating.   I've had to start wearing a jumper again and I might have to start wearing socks with my sandals (haha, I could have patches on my jacket elbows soon).    We had the boiler inspectors around last week for a yearly check so looks like we're good to go.

It's now 0830h and it's 8 C outside and 22 C inside with brilliant sunshine.  When the sun gets on the house, it'll get a lot warmer.

Better have some breakfast.

SimCityAT

We are pretty much OK, but its just to fire it up before its mega cold. Then when it is, its just a simple switch on and everything will be OK.

Sounds like a pre-launch sequence.

Mrs Fluffy and I do not know how to work our central heating.   We have this fancy controller neither of us fully understands.  And we've read the manual but remembered nothing.

I was a bit stupid. I should have got a boiler controller than worked via a PC or Android with a decent interface.

Just realized, this morning even before reading any comments that yes, maybe those German young ladies are not used to "Human contact". Everyone is living in the cellphone virtual reality.
Speaking face to face with people is a lost art.

Plus, I may of been mistaken for a beggar!!( Kidding)

No native Americans that I've ever known are not red but those 2 guys crossing in front of my car in New Mexico were so red I thought they were from another planet.
Might of been some booze that turned them redder then , not a beet an apple. It took me aback some, such a stereotype but this time it was true

I was locked out of my account on ex-pat a few times myself, thought maybe they had banned me!

Speaking of the candy brand, "Negro" I heard last week that the factory is leaving Hungary , think going to Germany.
The current factory in HU has 35 employees and they will switch over to making Halls cough drops.
Many years back in NV I was working alone with a older lady from the Philippines.
She started to cough so I offered her a Negro candy.
She looked at the wrapper and got mad.
Asked why they candy was called NEGRO.
I explained to her that it was named after chimney sweepers in HU.
Like it clears your throat like a sweeper.
She gave me one of those, "What ya talkin' bout Willis" looks.

Marilyn Tassy

So good ol' Bill Cosby has been sentenced to 3 to 10 years in jail for sexual assault.
Doubt he will live 10 years in prison at his age of 81.
It's getting so crazy/weird in the US with everyone coming out of the woodwork accusing everyone and their uncle of sexual assault from decades back.
I see some poor women in Germany and Sweden have been raped or even murdered and the culprit only given a light 6 year sentence with early out after just 3 years.
Not condoning any of these fresh perves but what about equal justice for all?
When I think about it I wonder if I can sue my date from when I was 16?
After all he lied to my mother and i about where we were going and then had the nerve to not even bother trying to hold my hand in the movie but grabbed my hand and shoved it down his trousers!!
Talk about getting fresh fast!
Most of these accusations are going back decades at least with politics in the US.
My case is only 47 years old, wonder if statue of limitations is up or not?
No, seriously things are out of hand( no pun intended!)

Negro is simply "black" in Spanish and Portuguese, from the Latin "Niger". Sweeps wear traditionally black cloths. It is really the simple.

I use to be a tech geek and first adopter. And I also studied how to create good UI design (which sadly today seems a lost art to many developers).

But then reality really hit me.

I think the inflection point was when I bought a GPS unit for field work -- the most expensive touch screen model -- and found it to be completely useless in Winter. It did not work with gloves. I was pretty annoyed at the manufacturer for ignoring such a basic need in a field tool, and myself for being duped.

So today, I really like physical things. Buttons. Nobs. Wheels. Getting to the point where maybe this would be easier to figure out than some of today's interfaces:

When I first read that, what came to mind (without actually reading the article) is that Dorothy was actually a fascist by clicking her heels together and wishing to be in Kansas again?

Wizard of Oz was made in 1939 so perhaps it could be interpreted as a warning about the rise of the right.

We live in weird times.  Never liked Bill C much anyway. He wasn't really popular in Europe although many people know who he is from bits and pieces  on TV and so on.   I thought he just mumbled and slurred his words a lot.

What does it mean anyway, 3-10 years?  I guess it means he does 3 years before eligible for parole.  In the UK if you get 3 years, you'd be out in 1.5 years for good behaviour.

Kevin Spacey was not even convicted but he's been ruined by the rumour mill.  No-one has charged him with anything.   No idea if he's guilty or not and no-one else does.  Not defending him,  but thinking about justice. just sayin'.

More interesting is what Trump will do with Kavanaughin the SC.   Nothing serious of course - sun will come up the same - but I like the idea of some Trump
oriented Schadenfruede.

Was never a Cosby fan either even though I grew up watching," I spy" on tv.
He just always seemed like  phoney fake.

He probably won't serve much time, just using him to out some Hollywood pedo's or whatever.
I am mad that they had to dump on Kevin Spacey at this time, why not just wait a few more seasons of House of Cards?

Yup, I'd agree about Cosby on "I Spy" but really the one we mainly knew was The Man from Uncle.  We had our own British ones - The Prisoner and The Avengers in the 60s and later on, some excellent cop shoes - far more gritty than say Starsky and Hutch or CHiPs.  All kind of plastic.

David Soul though is pretty popular in the UK and he now lives in London (and is a British citizen).  He was Jerry Springer in Jerry Springer:The Musical.  Mrs Fluffy and I saw that in London on the stage.  Wasn't bad but wasn't "opera" like Les Miserables.

Anyway, it's a bit ridiculous over Kevin Spacey.  I agree, HoC was excellent. Since he left the series, I'm just Pfff..and haven't watched the most recent season.

If you want to watch something rather good, try Killing Eve.

Marilyn Tassy

Yes, The UK "Avengers" was a show my Mod sisters watched, I watched with them.
Mrs. Peel was the coolest.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
was alright but the Avengers was  slicker.

I Spy wasn't all that great for me, didn't really like the actors much.I may Kill some time and look for Killing Eve.

Well said.

My bro just turned 60 yesterday, just so strange.
I remember my parents bringing him home from the hospital!
My old school mates older sister lives next door to my mom's old home. She just turned 80!
Time is moving on so fast it's like it's going double time lately.
Strange too that this old friend just had neck surgery while our mutual friend also had neck surgery a few months ago. They lived 2 homes away from each other.Wonder what's the connection between that and their necks both being shot.
Perhaps the only connection between them is the old 1960's American diet and both being on the computer too much.
Neither of them were overly physically  active as kids.
They got rides everywhere where as my healthier old friends and I had to walk everywhere we went.
Just something to consider, lifestyle does catch up to everyone at some point.

Well, dumbing down is what it's all about.  Lowest common denominator.  I Spy was OK but not that great.  Preferred Robert Culp to Bill Cosby.   If I had a choice, I'd go Mission Impossible.  Your mission Jim....

Mrs Peel was of course Diana Rigg who is at national treasure status in the UK and still working - she was in Game of Thrones last time - she's ancient now but still doing a good job.   Avengers became too stupid and "arty" towards the end.  None of the gritty story telling of spys and espionage that it could have been.  Almost cartoonish.  Typical of the groovy 60s exemplified in Austin Powers.

I'm binge watching Killing Eve - I watch some episodes back to back.  I'll finish it this evening.  The portrayal of a spy agency sponsored psycho-killer (called Villanelle) is rather well done.  Cold murderous insanity with clear intelligence, edgy politeness, good looks and fashion sense aren't things one normally thinks about as going together in a psychotic maniac.  Murderers tend to look nuts and enraged in Hollywood.  This one is rather unique.

And the lead actress ("Eve" played by Sandra Oh) is pretty good as well.  The scriptwriting is pretty good - quirky and quite British but with a good pace that is unusual in British drama.   Worth a look for sure.

Filipino person should know that Negro means black.  Tagalog is heavy on the Spanish influences.

Yes and of course "Negra" for the feminine, as it is an adjective. The point I was tr4ying to make is that words are not offensi ve, only the sentiment of them is offensive.

As if language doesn't change over the years.... I tend to reserve swear words for special occasions but for example on my left big toe I have what in my youth would be called a "black man's pinch" the blood under the toenail where I somehow dropped a hammer on it or tripped up my stairs., Now that would probably considered a big insiult, but that is what we called it with no insult intended when I was a lad.
