Mixed Marriage Process in Morocco
Petersonic wrote:1.Would anyone know whether a marriage certificate issued in the U.K. (British husband & Moroccan wife) can be converted to Moroccan marriage certificate by the court? Worth noting I’m not talking about translating the U.K. document to Darija.
2.Also, how necessary is it to convert or have a Moroccan marriage certificate?
It’s this because me and my wife have no issue with our U.K. certificate whilst here in Morocco or when travelling, for example last year (July) when travelling into Morocco our U.K. cert was accepted as a family purpose of entry.
Hi, technically you can submit the certificate to the morccan embassy to legally register it in morocco.
Under Moroccan law all morccan citizen who marry overseas must register there marriage and deposit of a
Copy the marriage certificate to the Moroccan embassy within 6 months to be recognised as a legal marriage.
If your wife has not got a british passport then it’s worth registering your marriage in Morocco or with the embassy. Who will then give your a certificate or marriage also I would think.
However if your wife has a second passport then your Uk certificate is legally recognised as your wife can just show her second passport whenever proof is required.
Please contact the morocco embassy for more details however below is information provided by the embassy.
“The marriage can be concluded according to the local administrative procedures of the country of residence, provided that the conditions of the offer and the acceptance of the capacity are met; that there are not legal impediments, the non-suppression of the Sadaq, the presence of two ale Muslim witnesses and the legal representative for minors.
In accordance with Article 14 of the Family Code, the civil marriage certificate must be registered with the Moroccan authorities (consular services).
Document required
Consular registration of the Moroccan party if he /she resides in the consular district;
Full copy or copy of the birth certificate for both spouses;
Full copy of the marriage certificate translation into Arabic, legalised by the local authorities;
Copy of CNIE and passports for both spouses;
Certificate of conversion to Islam for the non-Muslim spouse.
Spouses must submit a copy of the civil marriage certificate to the Moroccan consular services in the place of establishment of the marriage certificate or the place of residence of the spouses. In the absence of consular services, a copy of the marriage certificate is sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Directorate of Consular and Social Affairs). The Ministry then sends the copy to the civil registrar and the family justice section to the place of birth of each spouse. If the spouses or one of them are not born in Morocco, the copy is sent to the family justice section of Rabat and to the Prosecutor at the court of first instance in Rabat.
In case the civil marriage certificate does not mention the two Muslim witnesses, an additive act, called "Ishhad Moulhaq" (Annexation Witness), must be established by the Adouls at the consular services and annexed to the said marriage certificate before being sent to the Moroccan authorities.”
The above is quoted from the below link.
More information on the above can be seen on:
https://www.consulat.ma/en/registration … r-services
Hope this helps.
Hi
Thank you, very useful. A further question, if the marriage is legalised in Morocco which country governing law is applicable in case of divorce for example? U.K. where the marriage occurred of Morocco?
Thx

You legally can get devoice in either country. As both is recognised. If it’s been accepted by courts in U.K. then as your ex she would submit that devoice document to the morccan courts who would recognise it.
Alternatively you can do the same the other way round also.
Even if you had only been married In morocco you can still legalise get devoiced in the U.K. as a British citizen and the courts would just write to morocco requesting this. So the rules don’t change when it comes this this topic and legalise all marriages conducted by any legal state are recognised by most countries and Morocco is one of them.
They are also part of The Hague Act protecting child in case of such event were to occur therefore means both UK and Morocco recognise each other countries documents.

In the UK the papers you need to get are:
- A birth certificate issued within the last 3 months (this must be a FULL birth certificate – with information of mother and father)
Does this need to be issued within last 3 months ?
As I have mines since my birth ?
Also does the police certificate need to be ACRO, or can it be DBS ?
Thanks very much

Hi. Birth certificate does not have to be issues within 3 months. British orignal birth certificate is accepted but would need to be translated to Arabic. You can do this in morocco as it’s much cheaper to do so.
As for the police report.
A basic DBS check is fine. Again once you get the certificate please translate to Arabic can do this within morocco. However the police report cannot be older than 3 months. If it exceeds 3 months you will need to get another one done.
Hiya, thank you for a recent update.
Can I just check, if I have the originals of all my documents, is this ok? Meaning I don't need any documents certified with an Apostille?
Many thanks.
You were marry by the mosque? Our marriage was required to be Islamic.
This is to be married in the eyes of the law in Morocco.
All marriages to Moroccans have to be Islamic or Jewish by the court even if the woman is Christian.
Apostille is needed by Americans but I don't know about British. Check the website at the Hague or Moroccan government one.
If you don't mind giving them your original documents and literally never getting them back, then yes, just give them the original. But if you want to keep your original documents, you will need to take the originals, make 4 copies of them. Take the originals and the copies to a certification office. Give them the original to make sure the copies will be authentic and then they will stamp the copies. Those copies are now your originals that you will give to the court. You keep the originals. You don't give the court the originals, only the certified copies.
Hi I am uk born British pakistani trying to marry my girl in and from Morocco. i am due to attend an appointment in Rabat, on the 28th of October, I am rushing now trying to get all the documents here in uk, so far I will get the full birth certificate and applied for the police acro check. I will also get 3 months wage slips and a letter of employment, passport and photocopies will also get done . Is there anything you I am missing and who do I seen the documents too, to get them translated ? . Also my wife is worried that I have a criminal record from the past, she farts this may affect our marriage being accepted, can anyone give any advice on this ?
Hiya, I'm a British women marrying à moroccan man next week, and the documents I believe you need are:
All to be originals and as follows:
-Passport
-Birth certificate
-DBS check certificate (no older than 3 months)
-latest 3 months Payslips
-Copy of employment contract showing start date, hours, pay etc
-8 Passport pictures
- Decree Absolute (if you were married before and now divorced)
-Proof of address document (no older than 3 months)
-Police check from Morocco... If you go to this link, you can fill your details out, log request and then they will tell you where to go locally and collect the document (https://www.consulat.ma/en/criminal-record-foreigners)... It saves you an extra day waiting and a trip to Rabat.
- Medical certificate from a doctor in Morocco... They only ask you à few questions and then they write and give you the medical certificate.
ANY documents that are not in Arabic need to be translated so, I'd recommend emailing / WhatsApp messaging the translator a few days ahead of when you arrive to have them readily translated for when you arrive in Morocco (saves you a few days waiting)... The translator will need to see the originals before they hand over the translations.... Approx cost for translations can be anything upwards of £100.
The first thing you NEED NEED to do is book an appointment with the consulate in Rabat or Marrakech to swear an affidavit
https://www.book-consular-appointment.s … service=13
... Appoints are Tuesdays and Thursdays and go quick... make sure you switch your phones Internet page to desktop so you can see all time slots.
I hope this helps,. If anything changes to what I experience next week, I will let you know.
All the best
I went to Sanaa Bouslamti in Casablanca for translation. She is near the US Embassy. She is great, I highly recommend her. She translated my papers in one day. Her email address is listed on the Embassy site. Here is a list of translators in Morocco. https://ma.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-se … 1631924004
As far as your criminal history, Allahu Alam. It depends what you did that would make them deny your marriage. Part of the final police interview and why it takes about two weeks is because they are verifying everything in the application, including background checks. Just be honest with them. If you try to hide anything from them, they will start to raise doubts and questions. Make salat istikharah so that Allah will guide you to the right choice and open doors of khair.
You send the documents to any reputable translator in Morocco.
Try to ensure they have previous experience in translating documents for mixed marriages ( for example between UK and Moroccon partner ) . It's not difficult to find these translators in Morocco. They take about a week to do this. If you want to save time get your fiancé to give you the translator's email or WhatsApp and send them a pic of your documents so they can start translating before you arrive in Morocco if you have a limited time in Morocco.
With regards to your criminal record ...one practical option is submit your case and wait for the decision of the Judge and be aware that there is a possibility the criminal record may affect things and may give reason to the judge to decline the permission for marriage. It will be the judge who will make the final decision to approve (or decline) the permission for the mixed marriage "certificate".
Ideally you want advice from someone with a criminal record who has applied for the mixed marriage permission in Morocco.... not sure you will find someone in this forum .
You could try contacting the "adouls" who have experience in completing mixed marriage contracts, may be they have completed mixed marriage contracts for people with criminal records before?
Is it possible for you to ask at (non local) "wilaya" (police department which interviews you) if they know what the practical effect a criminal record has on mixed marriage permissions, i.e. Is there a possibility if the criminal record is for something a long time ago and is a minor offence that the judge might decide to approve the mixed marriage permission?
And remember final decision is with family court judge.
May Allah help you both and give you the best outcome which is best for your lives.
Hello good morning . I just want to ask if its possible to get residence visa in Morocco . Me and my fiancé are planning to live in Agadir . He is UK nationality and I am Filipina . We are planning to rent a long term Apartment the problem we are not married yet is it allowed to live together even not married . He's 68 years old and I am 51 . Thank you
Hello, no one will rent to you if you are not married. The Kingdom is starting to legally charge landlords and hotels that are renting without marriage. They will ask for proof.

As your both not Moroccan the rules of being married is not applicable to you as foreigners.
So technically you can live together if you both are not Morccan and both don’t have Moroccan Passport ans citizen
The marriage rules are only if one or both or Moroccan.

Get basic dbs as that’s accepted. Depending on your record it may or may not show up
Depending on what you did it may be accepted as long as you can justify your case to the police at the interview otherwise if rejected you would need to Appeal to the judge via a lawyer but it will be costly if it gets to that stage.
Anyone needed advise your welcome to

Hi all
My fiancé and I are considering marriage in Marrakech. This thread is really helpful as there is a lot of information to understand.
I can't see this answered but this was a very long thread so sorry if I've missed it:
Once we have permission to marry from the Moroccan authorities, can we have the marriage (including the legal signing of documents) in a location of our choice (e.g. a hotel)?
It's important to us that the legal part takes place in the same place as the ceremony itself. I'm just trying to understand the rules around where the 'contract signing' has to take place and whether there are any.

Hi, firstly congratulations on your process so far, upon getting the permission to marry you, take that letter and give it to an adool.
It is between you and the Adool where the contract and signing takes place. Some adool are happy to visit at a place of your choice. But the adool must be located in the city you ID card is registered (if your moroccan or your fiancé then that city)
Most of the times the Adool will ask you to attend to his office where you read and sign the marriage certificate however you can ask if he will visit a place of your choice. sometimes they agree and sometimes they don't. Just depends on the Adool.
Hope this answers your questions.

Notice of Marriage from the UK - You would need to get the Affidavit issued from the British embassy in Morocco and nationality certificate the British Embassy provides you at the same appointment. Bringing it from the UK would not give all the documents you need.
1, 3 months Payslip - Yes current ones.
2. A birth certificate - Original copy or certified copy
3 Letter of employment - Yes this is needed, should outline your position, how much you earn and when you started - if it outlines how much your earning in the letter then the courts don't require the 3 months wage slips usually. Also letter should have contact info of the employee for verification purposes and be on company letterhead.
4. ACRO police certificate - Basic DBS certificate is acceptable also
All uk documents needs to be translated into Arabic can do this within Morocco.
Embassy document are issued in French and english some family courts accept it the way it is and some require it in Arabic.
Documents need to obtain in Morocco, Medical certificate and police certificate this can be done at the same time as your fiancé does her/his
All documents should not exceed 3 months from the date you submit it into court.
london185 wrote:Hi

Spouse visa can be a lengthy process. Once your married in Morocco you require to get the Marriage certificate translated to English and certified also.
images of the ceremony sometimes can be requested. As you as the British citizen is the sponsor you require to fulfil some financial requirements
this would entail having a job and earning of a set amount more info can be found on the British Gov website. Or saving amounts can be checked in the British gov website.
The saving and wages needs to be shown for 6 months continuously. Your fiancé will need to go the english test in Morocco from the Gov approved centre, TB testing and vaccination. NHS bond needs to be in place by yourself full list can be found on the Gov website. in these cases it better to seek advised for a UK immigration law firm who can help with the process from start to finish. Its not a cheap process and can take around a year before the visa is given.
if you travel on a tourist/family visit visa. the changes are they might reject as they might not belie that they will leave at the end of the visa terms.
badmashn2 wrote:Criminal records can be tricky in Morocco
You mean police report/certificate?
If so this documents is not hard to obtain and can be ordered online from the following website: https://casierjudiciaire.justice.gov.ma … ture=en-US
if however you mean if someone has a criminal record and wants to get married then yes it can be difficult to get approval from the judge if you have a bad record but can be resolved fairly easily depending on they type of record you have on your certificate.
Hi Vakil,
Thank you for getting back, just one thing I am still confused about, Notice of Marriage from the UK do I need to do that, is that the affidavit, or do I just book an appointment https://www.book-consular-appointment.s … service=13
Booking an appointment in the British embassy would it provide the nationality certificate and affidavit at the same time instead of me getting it from the UK.
Thanks

Hi. Your welcome.
Don’t worry about the notice of Marriage that’s not needed.
Only document you need is the two documents given by the British embassy in rabat or marrekech depending on where you book the appointment.
They will give you two documents.
One is the passport verification/nationality certificate and the second is the Affidavit.
