Hi,
i am a mother of two from Nigeria and planning to settle in Malta with my two children(5yr boy and 2yr old girl).
I need to know:
1. Can my HND qualification, which i use here in d financial industry secure me job in Malta or I will have to go another degree to meet up the standard there?
2. If i pick up a degree there, would i be allowed to do a part time job while i study?and if i am allowed, what is the average pay?
3.Which areas. In Malta are best economical to settle considering the schools for the children ,accommodation, standard of living generally
4. Schools considered ok for my children and where to make them stay till I am through in the school and place of work.
I would so much be grateful if i have so many responses to my queries.
many thanks in advance
phunmie
Hi,
welcome to the forum.
I'm not sure what HND qualification means ? If you are talking about a Higher National Diploma it probably would not help as much as years of experience in the finance industry but in the end you would need to find an employer willing to apply for a work permit for yourself on the basis of your qualifications and experience.. For a non-EU citizen that can be time consuming and difficult.
Non-EU students are not allowed to work in Malta during the first year of studying.
If you gain residency through a work permit you would not be allowed to bring your children with you. You would have to be legally residing in Malta for 2 years before family reunification would be considered so the question about schools does not apply at the moment.
Malta is a very small island! In fact Lagos is about 10 times as large and has 10 times more inhabitants so the question about the best economic areas does not really make sense.
I would suggest you send your CV to job agencies working with the financial industry in Malta to see what the feedback is.
What is your actual job role in finances at the moment? That would help in evaluating your options here in Malta.
Cheers
Ricky
I appreciate your swift response,Ricky.
can you please send sites to enable me check for job agencies to send my CV?
i actually work in a bank, with roughly 5 years experience.
what other best options do you think could be good for me if its not advisable to come as a student considering the fact that i cannot leave my children behind?
many thanks always,
phunmie
Hi phunmie,
you can check out the Work section on this forum for previous posts on finding job agencies. There are lists there to choose from.
To be honest I don't really see any realistic chance of you being able to come to Malta with your children , whether as student or with a work contract. The authorities in the EU are very restrictive with work permits for TCN's. Either applicants are highly qualified professionals or willing to work in certain low paid jobs that no other citizen from the EU is willing to do.
To find work in the EU you would have to be highly qualified and better than job applicants from Malta and the whole EU. What is your last position in the financial industry? Actually working in a bank for 5 years does not say much. Consider the question: Why should a Maltese or Internationl Bank in Malta employ me instead of a local or EU worker with 5 years experience working for a bank.
Your first step would have to be finding work in Malta and coming without your children unless you are looking for work at the level of senior bank officer , bank director , senior accountant /auditor with international experience and so on. But even at that level it could prove difficult/impossible to come to Malta with children. At that level your future employer might be able to make it possible to bring your family.
Cheers

Hi All,
I will be moving to Malta in July this year.
Now from what I gather in this post I am coming to quite a good salary (~39 000e/year ~ 2 600e/month).
But I am wondering, what is the avarage utilities bill for a single guy?
I am already looking for some apt. on the island, but I never got any info about how much the energies would cost me.
Do you have any estimate? So I can plan ahead.
And also, taking into account the food prices, are they in any way more expensive than mainland Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland ...)?
D.
We have a one bedroom flat which we rent to a single guy. His average cost for Electricity and Water is between 50 and 60 euro a month.
Curious to know what kind of job you will have making (~39 000e/year ~ 2 600e/month)?
IT! I heard it's a very well paid job here on Malta.
But I wasn't aware that it's such a good salary on MT.
D.
WOW...I wasn't aware that IT paid so much here. A single guy can live very comfortable with (~39 000e/year ~ 2 600e/month)...even a family of 4 can live OK with that. Everyone I know who works for a Maltese company makes an average of 12-15 thousand a year...and most of them can go months without pay because their employers are waiting to be paid by their customers.. I don't know anyone who works in IT though so I couldn't confirm that salary. Maybe there are others on this site that can confirm it.
Thanks mgrima68,
Now I can, to an extent, calculate my monthly budget and how much I can spend for an apartment/bills.
Now, I just need to find an apt. And I heard this time of year it's kinda difficult!

Good luck in Malta - I think certain IT and other jobs especially in the Gaming and Betting industries can also get tax breaks. Tip on finding apartment...
Tweet that you want one and hashtag #Malta
I'm NOT looking for one and I tweeted yesterday and had 2 agencies contact me!
Hmm, great idea!
Well I'm ~ 2 months away from arriving, so I still have some time.
Thanks,
D.
Hi All,
I am considering about moving to Malta this June. I have read a plenty of information about housing, groceries and gross salary. It seems that the IT job in Malta is very well paid. Unfortunately, I am studying about the aquaculture with the master degree at Norway. I have been trying to search a related information about gross salary for this job, but I have not figured out yet.
Does anyone has any idea about this?
Thanks so much
This link gives information about aquaculture in Malta.

No idea about salary or any vacancies.

Hi everybody , are there any nurses ? I mean salary around 1700-1800 is it enough to live there ?
this is pre tax or post tax?
either way, it is more then enough to live here, even for a family should be enough
assuming its monthly
Unusual salary for a nurse ! Never heard of such a salary even for a specialist nurse.
Who is offering to pay that much post tax?
Cheers
Ricky
No, of course I'm not a nurse but I have several good friends working as nurses working at Mater Dei so I do know the job market a bit !
Your salary is fantastic! Well done. I will have to talk with my friends as they earn a lot less . -)))
Cheers
Ricky
Hi Ricky , i apply for several hospitals in Valeta and they offer my me just that salary ! Would you mail me your friends contacts ?
AFAIK there are no hospitals in Valletta ??
No !
I've just asked my friend who works as an endoscopy nurse at Mater Dei hospital if such a salary is possible !
There are not many hospitals in Malta with ICU unit and none in Valletta !
You don't give any details or what you are talking about and you are not even in Malta!
What do mean by ' what is that you wrote' ?
A salary of 1800 is fantastic for Malta! Not many earn that much after taxes so you can rent a villa with pool.
Cheers
Ricky
If you don't speak Maltese you will have to good in English !
AFAIK is a standard term ...............
of course , I am not yet in Malta ! But they offer me such a salary , and I a work as a ICU and Angiology nurse, so what can I excpect ? If it is so as you said it,s fantastic !
1800 after tax is good for up to two people but you definitely can't rent villas with pools on such an income.
So I guess my income of ~ 2700e (after tax), for me alone will be quite enough! I can relax now. Because I wasn't 100% sure how much that would be on the island.
D.
2700 after tax for just one person is more than enough...you should be able to save quite a lot of that while still living comfortably.
Hi All,
Greetings!
I am offered a position as an Accountant for 22,000 per annum, pre-tax. Would you know if this offer is okay?
I have to relocate in Malta sometime in July or Aug. I'm currently checking flats/room for rent. Would you know if a 300-400 per month of rent is reasonable, considering my salary, taxes, other deductions and cost of living?
Just to check manage my expectations when I budget my stay there.
Thank you! I appreciate all the feedback.
Hi saraciel,
the quoted salary is a reasonable salary given that you don't give much info about the exact position, experience and so on.
You should be able to sind a furnished appartment from 400 upwards depending on quality and location. Generally speaking in Europe people spend around 1/3 of their salary on rent.
Maybe you can give a comment on this post from somebody in Manila:

If you're a fully qualified accountant you should get more than 22k here. Aim for a minimum of 26k. Is the offer you got from a very small company?
Wow thanks for your responses!
@ricky: that's good that with that offer a 400 rent is still affordable.
Also, for additional info, the specific position is a senior accountant offered by one of the big 4 audit firms. I am a CPA and have 3 years work experience here in Manila from also a one of big 4 audit firms.
@Iambada: I'll try to negotiate with that. Thanks!
hello,
I would like an opinion. How is a 30k salary/year ( ~ 2000 Euro net/month ) for a family, 2 kids ( 3 and 5 years old ).
Only one working for few months ?
thanks
balamberke wrote:thanks, it's a good tip. Could you copy some websites where we could start looking for jobs as well. The situation is a bit same as with the flats. Many of the advertisements are out of date and 'timeofmalta' is perfect only for IT I'm looking for the something else. Every country has its own Gumtree or something like S1Jobs
