Does your credit card company charge you a foreign transaction fee?

According to this website

Roughly 90% of all credit cards charge a 2% - 4% foreign transaction fee for any purchase processed outside of the United States. Such unnecessary, high costs can add up quickly for any international traveler or shopper, so it’s a good idea to consider the increasingly popular category of cards that do not levy foreign fees

My Bank of America visa credit card charges me a fee and for that reason I have only used it once or twice in Ecuador in my 4.5 years here. For that reason, I am on a mission to get one that doesn't.

I have identified the credit card I will be applying for, in part because I just opened a checking account with them recently.

American Express cards have no foreign transactions fees, though they aren't quite as widely accepted in some places

Despite having a credit score of almost 800 (out of 850), Capital One rejected my credit card application on the grounds I am too poor.

While I bloated my already low income figure, I guess I will try applying again in another 6 months and bloat it further.

P.S.
Take note potential kidnappers and ladrons that you are much better off focusing on the expats in Quito.  Some of them are known to own cars and buy new Apple laptops without batting an eye.

I recently reactivated my subscription to Netflix after a layoff of a year.   Since  my bank rejected the transaction since it was of foreign origin, my credit card was used instead automatically by Paypal to pay the $7.99 fee.

I was charged by Bank of America a foreign transaction fee of 23 cents which represents a 3% fee.

I could have avoided that fee I had turned on my VPN connection on my computer before resuming my Netflix subscription.

I have 3 Chase credit cards, one is their regular blue sapphire card, which I hardly ever used until recently since I get cash back and can redeem my points on Amazon purchases in their checkout process without having to do anything but check the box.  I have 2 Disney cards, don't judge!!  I used to live close to Orlando and had Disney vacation club and got discounted Florida resident rates on my annual ticket, which was ridiculously cheap, and I get $1 Disney dollar for every $100 charged, and that's the card I use here. I just put a 6 month travel alert on my card so it doesn't get declined and I've had no problems.  Chase also handles charge backs like a dream.  I prefer my Disney chase card because everything affiliated with Disney is held to their standards and it's better than the regular chase card.  The Disney card, also has 2 separate call centers, only located in the US, so you can always understand what they are saying and the calls don't get rerouted and there's not a crazy wait time.  Last year, chase cancelled my cards and reissued them with the chip, but I never got them and my bank debit card was 2 years expired and I had never gotten the new one here either.  I had 2 weeks until I was going to travel back to Miami and had no credit cards to travel with and pay for my rental car.  I called regular chase, the agreed to send it to my manta PO box 3-5 business day delivery for no charge, which turned into a month.  My husband got it while I was gone.  I then told them I needed to get my Disney card sent also and they had to transfer me to the Disney call center.  The rep stayed on the phone, gave the Disney rep all my information (international address, etc), which indicates even their computer systems are different and not linked.  The Disney rep sent my replacement card here to manta 2 business day delivery.  That one took me 5 days to get but I received it before I left.  Their customer service is hands down the best I've ever experienced.  Neither card has charged me an international fee and my guess is because there's no currency exchange.  They do charge them and an money exchange fee but in 4 years here or in Panama I've never been charged.

My husband had a capital one card and has had to close and get a new card 4 times over the past 2 years due to fraudulent  charges and hasn't even used it in the US in over 4 years.  The last time they called him he had been waiting 4 months for a replacement card, which we still haven't received and they were questioning activity charges.  Since it was a new issue card and the number had changed on it, he didn't even have the number to make charges.  He told them the charges weren't his cause he didn't even receive the card.  They called him a liar and he lost his mind on them.  He had spent hours on the phone with them numerous times and I have no idea how anyone could have gotten the cc #.  They didn't want to reverse the charges.  He called back asked for a supervisor which they refused and so he told them to cancel his account.  In December, I put him on my Disney card as an authorized user.  I called on a Friday night, told them to deliver it to my hotel before the following Wednesday.  That guy did give me some hassle on it and told me it was a 3-7 business day delivery depending on the location it would be sent from which he had no idea of the location.  I stressed I had to have it but would tell the hotel to return it if I had already left.  He told me it wouldn't ship until Monday which I understood.  When I got to my hotel at 2 pm on Monday to check in, my husbands credit card was already there.  Trust me I have threatened his life if I have to experience any of the capital one disasters that he had on my account, lol.
