FOr compounds you can check the forum because there is a huge amount of material on this here by various people. apartments in compounds, thats a bit difficult to find since most compounds you will notice have villas. But there are bigger compounds with apartments. It all depends on your budget.
Since arabic is your mother tongue you shouldnt be having any problems in getting around. 
but then if you are looking for apartments outside in Khobar. you will have to contact the aqariya offices that are plenty..
