Hi, my partner and I are hoping to move over to Malta in the next couple of months and need some advice about contributing to our British pension whilst working in Malta.  Do any other expats do this please and how?
Thanks,
Jackie

Thanks Christine and I see you are from Grand Baie, would that be Mauritius?  I lived there as a child, most wonderful country. We are really looking forward to moving over.

State pension

you can pay voluntary contributions once a year - contact the overseas tax office in Newcastle

JackieT

That is great, thank you very much for your help.

If you're working in Malta and paying NI contributions, isn't there a way to get those credited towards your UK State Pension contributions?

Tim

Hello Tim, that would be ideal if that is the case.  I will enquire at the overseas tax office in Newcastle as suggested.

I haven't read it thoroughly but this: http://www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org. … g-overseas
says

"National Insurance contributions paid whilst you are living in Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man will count towards your State Pension. Likewise if you live in, or pay into the social security system of, a European Economic Area (EEA) country*, Switzerland or a country that has a reciprocal social security agreement with the UK**, then your contributions there (or residence) may help you to meet the contribution conditions for a UK State Pension. In addition, you may be entitled to a State Pension from your country of residence if you are contributing to its State Pension scheme."

Jackie, please post what you find out.

"may help you" and "you may be entitled" - looks like the small print is important

JackieT

Thank you all so much for your help, I will post any information I get.
