Hi everyone,

I'm planning the big move and I can't choose between coming by car with all my things stuffed in it or paying a Company to move everything there. I'm asking because i took a look and they are quite expensive as I expected.

If you don't know one, any comment on how you managed moving your stuff will be allright!

Thanks

Ale

Hello Ale,

Have you try to ask a free quote from our Moving to Malta partner:
https://www.expat.com/en/movers/europe/malta/

I am sure they can offer you a good deal for moving your items to Malta.

We moved all our stuff in a hi-top transit and a car.  It depends how much stuff you have to move and if it will all fit in.  Professional movers we found to be extremely expensive and it was much cheaper to ferry it over ourselves, around half the price in fact.  Plus you know all your stuff will be there at the same time you are.  This in mind, you have to be prepared for the driving.  Then there is the vehicle registration issues for bringing vehicles into Malta.  As with everything, no end to the paperwork and rules.....

I checked the movers' prices, and i agree with you. Possibly i'll move all my stuff by myself, and try to avoid registration matters renting a vehicle in Italy with a company which has braches in Malta, in order to take it where I have my stuff and give it back there, but i still have to check if this really would save me from burocrat issues. Thanks anw for confirming prices are so high that you can make them half by just doing everything on your own!!

Hi, I had a similar problem. I only wanted about 4 suitcases worth of stuff and all the quotes (even the one affiliated with Expat.com) were horrendously expensive - cheaper to buy all new stuff!

When I moved here I just came with one suitcase and on my 2 journeys back to England I've taken an empty case and filled it with my things. Flights can be pretty cheap at the right times so ended up cheaper than getting it all shipped. Of course it depends on the size of things you want, for me it was mainly clothing, shoes and books etc.

Good luck though!

Hi Ale
I just did the whole think by car.
And I have to say it was not at all that bad.
I left the UK on a Tuesday and was in Malt on the Saturday taking into consideration I staid in Belgium for 1 day.
I drove from Belgium to Genoa in 1 go.
It is a long drive, however, I took it easy and took lots of breaks.
I left at 5.30 AM and arrived around 9.30PM just in time for my ferry to Sicily.
I can definitely recommend it.
You have a long day but than a whole night and day to relax.
When arriving in Sicily I said in Palermo for 1 night and made my trip toward Pozallo in the afternoon to catch the boat to Malta.
If I`m not mistaken there is even a ferry directly from Genoa to Malta which takes a bit longer but is only once a week and arrives on a Monday.
You might want to have a look on the website www.viamare.com which gives you more info in regards to the ferry time tables.
I was by myself and thought is was very manageable, however if you have any questions to drop me a line.
Byee

Hi Wendy and thank you so much for sharing your experience.
It means a lot to me expecially because I'm finding there's a lot of people who actually moved to Malta to live there, which means to me that i'll find lot of guys in my situation, and making friends will be much easier, despite I'm not English.

Knowing that you did all that travel from the UK absolutely blew away all the doubts I had about doing it from Venice, which is by far closer to Sicily, even if I think there are ferries from Genova, as you said, and Rome as well, where the highways are still ok.

Therefore now I'm very into the car registration and the added costs (if any) that I may face by bringing into Malta a EU car (wheel on the left). But this is another matter.

So thank you guys so much for your kindness, again.

Ale
