We spent our first 6 years in Saudi in AlKhobar and enjoyed every moment of it. In 1979, when we first arrived, the place was filled with expats, mostly American, on account of the many Aramco oil projects that were really booming in those parts. There were Europeans too, involved in Road Constructions. Of the Asians, the Filipinos, Koreans, & Indonesians were the majority.
The small size of the city, its proximity to the Arabian Gulf, the humility of its people are some of the main factors that impressed us very much.
Coming to live and work in Riyadh in 1985 was like migrating to some unknown prairie. Everything was different. The massive land mass, the road networks, the people, the attitudes, and the rigidity and lifestyle of the society. Of course we have settled down here now.
However, give me another break in AlKhobar and I will be the first to take it, any time. The kids, all grown up now, still love to drive down on weekends or Eid holidays. They enjoyed it very much there.
Jubail was a small fishing village with a few thousand people when we first visited 30+ years ago. It has been transformed into one of the worlds largest industrial and port cities now. The infrastructure is immaculate.
We used to drive to Qatif early Friday mornings and buy fish, still wriggling and jumping, straight from the boats that used to return from the sea.
I think, most of all, its the people that make the difference.
ya thats very true
its all about the ppl
you guys sound like alot of fun maybe u should take me with you next time ?
Ooh man i wanna go 2 AlKhobar now
Ahlan wa sahlan
Eastern region as a whole have, the people r so friendly. I can understand the term rigidity in Riyadh lol. Usually city life is more stressful I guess anyways ur all invited to al Hasa - to me it's the best

So this may give you understanding of some of my answers on the forum because this is where I've lived, by myself, for almost three years. It's all I know of life in Saudi Arabia.
Wish I could experience living in the East or West but when I leave Riyadh, it will be leaving the country for good.
It's really amazing, even their exists cultural differences between different regions. And the driving there is little faster than hofuf. One does not feel lonely here as the locals r so friendly. And yeh I can understand some of ur comments from that perspective. I wish u could experience the east side u will love it for sure
However, that said ... my experiences here with Saudi's have been very positive. There are many, many people that I've known that I have liked a lot
Agree there r good ppl everywhere
