Hi everyone, has anyone had experience with the following - one parent is a naturalised citizen of Mauritius. Can children and the non citizen parent get nationality/citizenship of Mauritius  through this way? Or is it a definite no, looking online websites indicate it can only be possible through a birth citizen. Thanks Shazza

PERSONS QUALIFIED AS MAURITIAN CITIZENS
A person becomes a citizen of Mauritius either by birth or by descent
BY BIRTH:
(i) A person is a citizen of Mauritius, if he is born in Mauritius before 1st October 1995, of either Mauritian or foreign parents
(ii) A person is a citizen of Mauritius if he is born in Mauritius after 1st October 1995 and if either of his parents is a citizen of Mauritius.

BY DESCENT
A person born outside Mauritius is a citizen of Mauritius under section 20(3) and 23 of the Constitution if either of his parents is a citizen of Mauritius by birth.

So a definite no to a naturalised parent?

Julien

Getting the nationality can complicated indeed. From what we can read on External's link, it won't work for the non naturalized parent.

I guess you should get in touch with the PMO and ask ? Maybe it can work under special circumstances ?

Any idea on the children alone? Would they be able to get it via a naturalised parent who was not born in Mauritius, but has citizenship through their parent (so the children’s grandparent is the one born in Mauritius)

Not possible.

The child will be granted citizenship only of one of the parents is a Mauritian citizens by birth, not naturalization.

In this case, the only way to get citizenship would be to live in Mauritius continuously for 5 years and then make an official request to be naturalized.
