My wife and I are looking to move with our 2-year-old son

Hi,

Thanks for making this thread. My wife and I are looking to move with our 2-year-old son next year. I have 5 years ESL teaching experience at a university here in Canada and we are both TEFL certified with bachelor degrees (history for me and business for her with a master in counseling psychology)

We have tons of questions!

1. Is there any possibility of her working as a counselor? (English or French kids at private schools?)

2. Can a family survive with only one person teaching on a 30 000 - 40 000 a month salary in say Huai - Hin? (We aren't looking to live a lavish lifestyle, but want to have a safe place to live for our family and plan on eating almost exclusively Thai food, and to save money we plan on homeschooling in the future if necessary)

3. Do most places require your transcripts or just your diploma?

4.  What is the stance on tattoos? I have one and it's not visible, but am wondering if it should be covered when going to the pool etc.

5. How do you change your profile pic? :)

Thanks so much for any advice!

Cheers,

Steve

Plenty of International schools here in Thailand. They pay way better than 40 k p/mth. Google and send inquiries direct. If you get hired from overseas you get a far better deal. In most cases 120 k baht p/mth plus benefits.

Don't worry about tattoos. This is the land of tats. But cover up whilst teacking.

Good luck.

1. If you were to get a job at an International school then there is a chance that one could get a job as a counselor. At least that is the case in Chiang Mai. However, I assume that those jobs are very competitive.

2. A family of three might be able to survive in Thailand on 30 k baht, but that would be more likely if you were to live the Thai way. Since you're not Thai that would be very hard to do. Considering you have a 2 year old that brings into question the variable costs with your child. For example, health care, clothes, or whatever. If both of you are working then there's the cost of day care. This is simply a guess but 90 k baht might be closer to three people living comfortably. Secret; the more you live the western way the higher the cost of your life style. As an example (on another string in this forum) I can live very comfortably on 30 k baht a month. Another person stated that he spends 50 k - 60 k baht a month. The major difference is he eats western food and lives a western style, which in this example costs twice as much.

3. From first hand experience, copies of diploma's and copies of transcript would be helpful to have in case they need them for documentation purposes of their files. Transcripts may not be an issue, but it would not be a bad idea to have them just in case, or to further support your application.

4. Specifically, I don't know what the standard is for tattoo's. But as the above post states it would be wiser not to have it in public view, especially during the interview and during working hours. Schools world wide can have a conservative approach when it comes to tattoo's, even if the general population accepts them.

5. I can't answer that question.

Thanks for your reply! Can you suggest any international schools that you know are reputable?
