Doing some bathroom renovations. There is already a washing machine in the bathroom but I want to add a vanity unit for my wife with power outlets (hair dryers and stuff). builder says power in bathrooms not allowed in Malta. i said what about using an current trip outlet that automatically cuts off. This is Code in UK (and just about everywhere else).
What do you think?

It's an RCD to trip out. But you still cannot put socket outlets in a bathroom. Or a light switch.it has to a pull cord type or outside the bathroom.this from an electrical installation lecturer for 25 yrs.

Thanks for that. No hairdryers in the bathtub!!!

We used to have two bathrooms with hairdryers in at the first house we lived in, they were wall mounted and hardwired through the wall. The dryers were activated when you lifted the 'handset' which activated the power switch in the sealed body of the unit and sent the hot air through a flexible tube to the dryer.
Don't know whether they are still available!

Amazes me that I can't charge my toothbrush or shaver in the bathroom in Malta due to safety concerns, yet on every single worksite in Malta, there is ZERO safety equipment. I've honestly never seen a hard hat in the country, and there is a work site on every street.

On official government sites you see them and you also see them being worn as crash helmets!!!

Shaver sockets were installed in our last house here!

At the building site at Gozo hospital, everybody wore a hard hat on site, they did not do much work but they did ware hard hats!

Assuming Malta follows UK regs.
Sorry you are out of date. 17th Ed iee permits a socket outlet so long as it is 3m from zone 1 and an RCD is fitted

Yes you can assuming you can use UK regs see below for conditions

Acc. to Maltese SUBSIDIARY LEGISLATION 423.39 - ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS REGULATIONS:
"13. (2) Unless otherwise specified in these regulations, electrical installations shall comply to the latest edition of the Requirements for Electrical Installations issued by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK) - BS 7671 latest edition and with generally accepted principles of good design and safe practices."

Mela, this means BS 7671 is applicable in Malta (yeah, really, even though not many certified electricians know these requirements.   I could tell you stories ...   :dumbom: )
Example? "... builder says power in bathrooms not allowed in Malta.

And what says Section 701 of the BS 7671 (IEE Regulation 701)
(note: this is not the latest version!)

... or if you prefer a Video Tutorial on Youtube

Jesus, I love the possibility of finding every information on the internet in no time. 20 years ago this was much harder  :) In Malta it still seems to be pretty hard to acquire correct info ....  :sosad:

It may be important to add though: BS 7671 allows wall sockets in bathrooms only with a 3m horizontal safety distance from "Zone 1" (that's basically the bathtub or shower).

I'm not sure of your bathroom is longer than three meters, but ours sure isn't.

So still no sockets in the bathroom for us :(

Probably a bit late for your advice as you are replying to a post from 3 years ago.
