Driving licence codes for EU

Johncar

I suspect there maybe at least some who are not aware that all D/Ls issued on the EU, have codes printed on them regarding restrictions etc which apply to the holder

The entensive list may be seen here In English
(NB. There maybe slight differences for each country so if in doubt check)

Anhow more information on Drivers licnce and the time you neeed to exchange your old UK/EU one.

Exchanging your UK licence to a Spanish one:

Provisional Driving Licence in Spain.

Provisional or temporary licences, international driving permits (or any other certificates issued in your home country) are not regulated at EU level and may not be recognised in other EU countries.
Do you have a provisional driving licence and are moving to another EU country? Check the rules with the national driving licence authority in the country you're moving to.

There are few counties that are outside the EU from which you can obtain a licence (except some classes of vehicles) without a test resit. Detailed in the link below.

The rest of the world will have to resit the test.

Very helpful post as always. You are a genuine asset to the forum

Just in passing:

NB. To be able to exchange a DL obtained in another country one must have had the licence BEFORE moving to Spain

That of course means one cannot take a test in say U.K. after having moved to Spain and then exchange it in spain

Also note.   If as a resident in spain, one loses their DL issued in say U.K., they cannot replace it with a U.K. DL. as they would not have an address in U.K. WHERE THEY LIVE.  That also applies when one needs to renew a U.K. DL having reached 70 years    For those reasons, there are others too, I suggest that if one moves to spain then exchange your DL for Spanish one ASAP

And of course one cannot drive in spain unless they have their DL in their possession.   A copy of a denuncia showing it is lost is not sufficient.   Replacing a lost spanish d/l is reasonably quick

Hi,

I am not sure if this thread is the right place for my questions.. but I did a search and I did not see anything like what I need to know...

I moved from Switzerland to Spain in November.. but not yet officially I am still awaiting my permit approval.

I have a NIE of course.. and I have a Swiss license.

My swiss permit expired at the end of February.

Do you know how long I can drive with my swiss license in Spain while awaiting my permit to get a Spanish license?

If this is the wrong place for my question I will post a new thread and apologize in advance.
