My wife and I will be moving to Alicante in 2012 and will be renting before we buy.I am 66 my wife will be 59 after paying the rent we will have £1200 per month to live on will this be enougth

Of course it depends on the lifestyle you expect to lead, but I would say you should be able to live comfortably on £1200pm

Allow €80-€100 for water/electric/gas per month
SUMA(Council tax) c€350per year
Community Fee (€200-€500)per year

Food is a lot cheaper than UK if you eat local produce.
Petrol is about the same, maybe slightly cheaper

Consider how the exchange rate could affect you.  For example today is €1.10 / £1.  Exchange rate could drop lower and that impacts on the money you have to spend.  Of course it could (should) get better over time and this means you'll have more Euros to live on.
