Just a fraction west of Cabrera.. very close to where are now, I expect

My thinking thus far is to get a rental, and undertake a hands-on adventure in building...... if my materials testing comes out with good result.  I've got good ASTM data from the US but raw materials here that I might like to use haven't been so tested as far as I can see thus far.

I've been doing early cost/benefit analysis and will keep you posted on what I find out, good or bad, success or total failure.

A good outcome would be to empower the community (giving to it) via a technology transfer, not just availing myself of low cost labor.

More later,

JR

Re: Materials Testing

My friend built the Amanera hotel here
He has built all over the world

He says the cement here is the best he’s ever seen
In fact , the cement company won a worldwide award for the use in the design of this hotel
Quite an accolade for a Dominican company

So much for the cement

I have zero doubts about the cement.  I absolutely intend to use it.  A lot of it.

Sort of playing with a range of other local materials, including cement, and taking some of the skilled labor out of the block laying  portion of the equation.  Not my first rodeo in that regard as to mortarless block systems.

CEB and Surface Bonded Cinderblock to be specific.

Kind regards,

JR

For new expats be aware that people get paid a double salary in December each year (2/13 rather than normal monthly 1/13) and so there is so much more money in circulation and a once in a year opportunity for the bad guys.

thanks for the reminders  from yourself and lennoxnev, planner.. there is also a lot of desperation on the part of those who will not be getting a salary of any kind, so please keep your heads on a swivel, and  take no unnecessary risks out there. as a matter of fact, this is about the time people should start minimizing their contact with the environs outside their homes..

This is the 2nd craziest time of the year. The first is Easter Week,  'tis true, 'tis true.
