Hi there Gordon,
I didn't get married to him.... I was way too trusting of other people, which was my real problem.

I originally went to Peru with intentions to stay for a while, sold everything of mine, but that same boyfriend was way too afraid to step outside of his comfort zone and find a job. Instead, I flew back to the states and continued the relationship [sad face]. Another turning point, haha!

Allie. The above is one traveller's report about Vilcabamba, Ecuador - not about the place of the same name in Peru. I think it's the Ecuador one you're interested in, and it's the one my son lived in 16 years ago; it must have changed by then!

Most of us are too trusting when we're young! Even in my old age, I trust everybody once; but only once. I think I've been lucky in life, to be let down so rarely. Of course, a big enough let-down can screw things up badly, and luck doesn't always come when you call it up. My son and I pretend to believe in Loki the Norse god of luck and caprice. Luck is indeed capricious, but the secret in dealing with him (Loki) is that you have to meet him half-way. It's like the old joke about the man who trusts God to make him a rich man by winning the lottery. After years of disappointment he loses patience and chastises God for letting him down, and God tells him, "Look, I want to help you, but you have to buy a ticket!"

Here's what I wrote about another turning point of my life. It's the closest I ever got to being a hippy.
