Hello fellow expats in Vietnam .  We are considering a move and my main concern is my children’s ease of  assimilation.  Has anyone moved mid year?  We would have to start school in the second semester, which worries me a bit.  Is anyone familiar with the American School in Ho Chi Min district 2?
Thanks.. Sam

Children tend to adapt quite quickly. There will be some teething problems, but it wont last too long. The age of the children can be a factor, teens being more difficult.

They are 10 and 7, so still adaptable, but I’m sure they’ll freak out a bit😳

Of course, you're taking them away from their comfort zone, friends and way of life. Kids adapt, you should be ok.

Studies have shown, that every else being equal, moving to new places and schools makes kids more resilient and is an overall positive.
I, on the other hand lived in the same house until I went to University and even though I've moved pretty much every couple of years for the last 50 years, I still freak out every time!

Moving is good for kids. Builds adaptation skills, perspective, resilience, independence, maturity. The expat schools are full of kids who also moved to a foreign county. American School is in Thao Dien, upscale neighborhood.

I first traveled in Asia at 11. It was more primitive then. Loved it, many great memories. I didn't freak out at all. Later my family moved cross-country US 4 times while I was in school, and never helicoptered. Yes I lost childhood friends that way, but too bad, early prelude to adulthood. Prepped me for expat life too.  :top:
