Hello all. I figured I would introduce myself to the group. My wife (US Citizen) and myself (UK citizen) will be visiting the west coast area of Scotland this summer (Dumfries & Galloway area and Oban plus surrounding area) with the thought of moving there next year. I will have my US citizenship shortly and we hope after our visit to start the apparently long process of getting my wife a spouse visa. She is a Math teacher here in the US and has gotten her English teaching license and now we will be starting the process of getting her Scottish teaching license. I am a Private Investigator but doubt I will continue that upon our return, perhaps find something working in the environment or maybe just do the B&B / self catering thing, depends on home size. This forum has been very helpful, so many posts with helpful suggestions.

Well, looks like we will be moving hopefully April 2020. So time to get visa stuff going, chat with bank about mortgages, start house hunting, look at shipping companies from Virginia USA. Going to be a busy bee.

Hey Guys

Welcome back... I'm not sure you will get a mortgage with any banks? It could depend on your credit rating and how long you have been out of the country regardless if you or your partner is a UK citizen.

Before you move you might want to talk to some first?

Edit: Sorry you were not welcomed first time round.

Been out of the UK for 30 years, so zero credit rating in the UK. Will be talking to the bank that my parents use, so hopefully that will help a little, plus I hope the fact we would be putting down 30-40% as a down payment on the house might also help. Hoping that we can get my wife squared away with her teach license in Scotland and a job offer might also help, mortgage wise. Will see what happens when I speak with the bank manager in a couple weeks.
Thanks for the welcome, no need to apologize, life can get in the way, lol.

Just a little update.
Well we have found a house that we like, needs a fair amount of work to be done on it, but it is a great location. So we now have a solicitor in Oban that we will be working with and who will be advising us on local plumbers, roofers etc as well as helping up with the actual purchase of the house, provided everything checks out. Excited to be flying back to the UK ( outside Liverpool) for 10 days to spend time with my parents and also have a chat with the bank and mortgage people. Meet with a few contractors to get rough estimates of the work that needs to be done on the house, of course we would get local quotes when the time is right.
Getting all the paperwork together for my wife to apply for her teaching license in Scotland, and for family / spouse visa for wife. Undecided if we will use a company to help with the visa or just go it alone.
Decided to get a pay as you go smart phone, nothing too expensive, I think Asda has some good deals, using our US phones gets very expensive.
Starting the search for moving/ shipping companies to move us from Virginia to Scotland. We don't want to do the pack the container yourself deal, any suggestions would be most welcome.
Pet wise, will fly our dog back, so searching for airline approved crates for 90-100 lb dogs.
Well thanks for any help / suggestions. Hopefully as this thread continues it will provide help for someone else down the road.
