Hey there,

We are planning to relocate from New Delhi (India) to Johannesburg in July 2011. My daughter is 4 years old. Can any of the members please provide inputs to the below queries?

1.    Coming from India, how easy/difficult is it for a child to cope up with schooling in Joburg considering the change in lingo and phonetics?
2.    Can my daughter get an admission to pre-nursery school if we come in July and then to a regular school in Jan 2012? She is currently studying in her Nursery class in Delhi. I understand that regular schooling in SA starts at the age of 5
3.    If admission to pre-nursery is not possible at this stage, and I choose to bring my daughter in Dec’11, can she get admission in a regular school then?
4.    Which schools are best suited for children of this age....and in/around Sandton?
5.    We plan to stay in Sandton, what would be the monthly expenses (max) considering a family of 3?
6.    What would be the monthly rental for a mid size car if taken for a long duration?

Your response will be highly appreciated.

Raj

Hi Raj,

Welcome.

I think children are so flexible and a that young age their minds are like sponges and they learn so much, linguistics is so easy for children at that age as they fit right into the class.

Grade 0 is for age 5 in this country but I know you can commence in Grade 1 which is 6 years old.

Placing a figure on living is very difficult, we spend a fortune on 4 of us but my 2 children are in a private school in Hartbeespoort Dam and we live a very comfortable, active and adventurous life.

I will look around and see what cars cost at rental companies for you and respond.

I'm not sure on rental in Sandton, would you consider other areas? Where are your offices?

I think either way now or December your daughter will get admission, creches and
schools are very good this way.

All the best
Heather

Thanks a lot Heather.. Your reponse is really encouraging as my primary concern was my daughters' adjustment to a new place..

My office is in Bryanston and hence i would want to look for places closeby..

Hello Raj,

Forgive me for taking so long to respond, I haven't had a chance to look at cars for you, however look up on the websites avis.co.za or kulula.com or flymango.com and you are sure to find some really good deals.

I asked about location, because I have a lovely home in Pecanwood Golf Estate that I rent out which you may like to consider, beautiful safe estate. Look it up on the internet and you can see the estate alternatively I could send you an email on it.

Kind regards
Heather

Hi dehliite
Your child will be fine I had a friend from India when I was in school. He coped very well, find a good school near where you'll be residing. Kids adapt quickly anyway.

I work at a preschool. We accept children from the age of four years.most primary schools have preschools on their premises.you will have to drive around and look for primary schools with preschools. A normal nursery svhool will also accept your daughter. My personal opinion is to go look at the preschools and getc a feel of the place, you do not want your child to go to school at a place with a lot of tension. Also, some schools have up to 38 kids in a class wich is not good as your daughter needs individual attention. A class should not have more than 26 kids in a class.I don't know of any schools in sandton but alberton has some great schools. General alberts primary school is a primary school with. A preschool and so is alberview primary. If you don't mind your child learning afrikaans then you can take her to orionland at learskool orion or randhart rakkertjies at laerskool randhart. I'm a teacher at randhart. As long as she ca n speak english she can go to one of these schools where they will get a speech therapist to help her speak afrikaans.
