My name is Carole, I'm French but I've been living in London for 7 years now. I find it very interesting to share my experience with others so don't hesitate to ask me for advice.
Looking forward to hearing from you

Bye
Carole

Julien

Welcome on board Carole :)

Where are you in London?

Si tu veux partager ton expérience, je te propose de compléter cette page: vivre à Londres
et de prendre part aux topics en rapport avec Londres ;)

Take care,

Julien

CaroleK

Salut,

Comment tu as trouve ton retour en France.

Julien

Gary

Sounds like an interesting discussion. Too bad you guys changed to French, leaving the non-Frech readers out :(

Julien

That's true Gary, sorry, I was lazy the other day and I posted in french

CaroleK

Sorry Gary, Please forgive us!!!!
Forgiven??

Hey Carole,

No problem :D It's just that my French is a little rusty. I'm fluent in Dutch and German though and my Spanish is finally getting there :)

julien does a great job with this forum, I fully agree!

You still awake? It's 9:30 PM here - I'll be around for a while. :)

I made that myself. But to make things easy, Julien made a program - it's somewhere on the site - to make them. I don't remember where he has it but I'm sure he'll tell you when he reads this.

Julien

Hi Carole,

you should have a look to this small program: https://www.expat.com/signatureGenerator/signature.php

(there's still a small bug but it should be working)

CaroleK

Hi Gary and Julien (and whoever is reading this),
I think that seen that you can both speak Spanish I should practice it. I used to be really good at spanish but since I've been in the UK I speak English constantly (obviously).
Result I've lost most of my Spanish and worst of all I am even forgetting my French.
Last week I met in London somebody I met on a forum. He told me that if I had not told him that I was French he would have thought I was English. Yes, I have an English accent when I speak French and a slight French accent when I speak English.
It's actually pretty depressing so now whenever I've got the opportunity I listen to the radio in French.
Have you found that you were both losing your language?
I'm going to e-mail a friend and I'll be back shortly
Carole

CaroleK

Hi Gary,

I can see you're online. Hope you are ok.
I'm about to watch "Lost in Translation" pienso que es una buena pellicula.
Oh dear does not sound too good I'm also a bit rusty.
Hasta luego amigo

Carole

Gary

Forgetting your French?? How long have you been gone form France? I left Holland in 1988 and I have no problems with my Dutch, no accent (according to my folks when I visit Amsterdam). In every other language I speak I have a Dutch  accent. So what - I am Dutch! :D
To keep my knowledge up to date, I daily read Dutch and German news on the net. I also try to keep my knowledge of Franch up to date, but that's more difficult because I never was really fluent in French. Back in the early eighties I was in France a couple of months per year and also in the French speaking part of Belgium. That's over 25 years ago ( Geez I'm really getting old :) )
Spanish is a must since it's the main language here (although many people speak at least some English).

CaroleK

Hey there,

I've been living in London for nearly 8 years now. I am also getting old even if I'm only 27 ( ok 28 in October) oh dear!!!
I'm not following the movie I'm hooked with this forum now. Not good for my eyesight.

Gary

I believe I saw it - I don't really remember. Isn't it made by whatever-her-name-is Copolla Ford? :)
Have fun!

Gary

I'm twice as old :)

CaroleK

Good on you you're quite good at this computer thing.

Gary

I make a living at my 'puter.. I run a computer service business and design, maintain and host websites..

CaroleK

Woah I'm impressed !
I'm a store manager for a furniture company. But I want to set up my business hopefully in the next 6 to 10 months. I want to create one of these agencies who help French people find a place to live in and a job....Relocation Specialist sounds more posh. I'm very kin on creating something actually focusing on the client and not on the money only if you know what I mean!!! I think I have got great ideas and my advisor thinks so too.
I've posted another topic to kind of get a better idea of who my market is and what they want. Hope it works.

Gary

Sounds like a great plan! it's good not to focus on the money. If you do a good job, the money will be there anyway! Putting the client in the center of the attention is the best approach!
Are many French migrating to England? Do you plan to focus on French who plan to move to Brittain?
You might want to get in touch with French companies who transfer employees to London(Brittain) for a certain period.
I think its a great business idea! You could even start it part time and keep your present job.

CaroleK

Good thinking Robin!!! (from Batman the movie just in case I got it the wrong way round).
My advisor said that if I could leave my current job I would progress quicker but I can't afford to start denting on my savings but I will probably go part time in a few month. I'd love to be ready before next summer because it is the busiest time.
I'm going to limit the number of clients that I deal with weekly and deal with them more personally. I don't know if I should tell you about my ideas. Maybe not just in case we've got spies. I've realised that loads of companies target forums very swiftly.

Gary

If I were you I wouldn't quit the job before you at least have a feeling that your business is going to be successful. When you have to live from your savings and start a new business, the money goes out faster than you can imagine. :)

If you want, we can take this conversation to email. (click on email under my name in the left hand pane) I have some experience in running a business. I started my first business in 1988 in Germany (a consultancy business). I sold it in 2001 and came to PR to retire (and marry the love of my life whom I met in the internet)

After being retired for a year I got tired of being retired and started working again. First I had a handyman business and now I have my computer service thingy (http://computerwizards-pr.com) and the website design and hosting service (website is still under construction - I'm too busy to finish it :) ).

CaroleK

I've sent you an e-mail I hope you got it ok

Gary

Nope I didn't :) I know why - I just checked my profile and noticed a typo in my email addy It's corrected now. I'll mail you :)

Gary

Mail is underway :)

CaroleK

I must be a bit thick I didn't manage to create my flags and I tried 3 times. I'll try another time.
Hope you are all ok.
Speak to you soon I'll be online.

Ciao

Gary

Like this, right?

Gary

I made a better one and stored it in Photobucket.
Here it is: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m17/forCarole/carole.gif

Put the following code in your signature:

Code:

[img]http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m17/forCarole/carole.gif[/img]

That should do the trick :D

CaroleK

Thanks Gary I'll try it.

I'm a bit disappointed because nobody has answered my 1st 2 marketing questions yet. People are not interested. I am most probably doing it all wrong.
The best thing for me to do is to go to France and do my researches there. But I can't go there until next year which will be too late.
If you have any suggestions about a good way to research my market please let me know. My advisor told me I should find people who say they would actually like to try my services. It's hard but I don't want to give up. I have worked so hard for it for the past 7 months that I am exhausted now and I need all my strength for my current job. It is very demanding both intellectually and physically.
Take care
Carole

CaroleK

Hi Gary,

No news from you. Hope you're doing fine.
I've had a hard day at work today so I am chilling out with some wine. I bought a medium to sweet. I can't imagine what a sweet wine tastes like as my one is already so sweet, unbelievable.
I've got a manager's meeting next week and I have to prepare loads of paperwork it's just crazy.
Hope to catch up with you soon.
Carole

Gary

I'm busy like hell :) Working on a couple of websites and the clients keep telling me they want it finished yesterday..

About your project, I think you should concentrate on working with companies. (Most) Private people are not prepared to pay for the type of service you're planning to offer.
No need to go to France for your research ( unless you feel like a vacation back home :) ) I'd tryto get  list of French companies who send people to the UK on expat contracts and contact their human resources dept. to see if they're potentially interested in the type of service you plan to offer.

Medium sweet wine? Yuck! :D

P.S. did you ever get that email I sent you?

CaroleK

Hi Gary

Nope never received your e-mail. Thanks for your advice I will try to contact some companies.
I'm going to have dinner now will catch up with you later

Bye

Gary

Hmm did you enter your email address without typos here? ( that would make me feel better after I found out I had a typo in mine :) )

CaroleK

I don't want to look stupid 'cause I'm not but what exactly is a typo ? Then maybe I can tell you yes or no. I've just realised I'm really crap at computer stuff....
I've e-mailed Julien and he has e-mailed it back so it should work.
Anyway my e-mail address is KOCTURKIYE@aol.com  (my husband is turkish so it's in turkish).
It's midnight and I'm working early tomorrow (yes I work at weekends, do you ?) so I should go to bed now.
Take care
Carole

Gary

Typo - abbreviation for typographical error ( click!)

I work 7 days per week, unless I don't feel like it (or my wife drags me away from my 'puters.. :D) That's the problem when you run your own business. Normally I spend like 14 hours per day at my desk. I'm not working all the time though. I visit forums, read news, write and read emails. The only luxury I allow myself is a siesta  - hey I live in the tropics, so I can do that, right?
