Payment methods in Iran

Hello everyone,

Once you're settled in Iran, you will need to make some basic purchases, like groceries or pay bills. Hence, it is essential to know the payment methods available in your host country.

Which are the most common payment methods in Iran? Why would you prefer some forms over others?

Does the amount of money or the type of paid services (groceries, bills, rent, etc.) determine the choice of payment methods?

Are there any apps at your disposal which make the payment process easier in Iran?

Can certain foreign currencies be used to make payments?

Have your habits in terms of payment methods changed since moving to Iran?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Hello Priscilla,

The main payment methods for daily life here in Iran are 1) Local bank debit cards, 2) Pay bay cash in Iranian Rial (Toman) . Paying by cash is easier for foreigners since for debit card they should open a bank account.
International credit or debit cards (such as Visa, Mastercard, ...) are not acceptable. Also foreign currencies are not suitable for grocery and small purchases but it's common for renting apartment. You can change your foreign currencies to IRR in exchanges or some of bank branches (you can find bank branches everywhere! more than other countries you have visited!)
Also online shopping is common if you have an Iranian debit card.

I hope this would be helpful for you.
