Reading habits in Ecuador

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

Books can be your greatest companions whether you have already settled in Ecuador or are now planning your move. Are you an avid or occasional reader? We would like to know more about your reading habits.

What type of reading do you enjoy? Do you read novels, comics, magazines, newspapers, etc.?

Where do you purchase or borrow books in Ecuador (bookstores, online, library subscription, etc.)? Do you prefer digital reading?

Do you have an average budget devoted to reading in Ecuador? Do you buy books or pay a library membership fee?  Do you spend more or less than in your country of origin?

In what languages can you find the books that you usually read?

What books or magazines would generally be found on your bedside table?

Thanks for participating,

Bhavna

This is a subject near to my heart. I'm an avid reader. I'm in a relationship with a woman from Ecuador & we are thinking about retiring there. It's still a ways off, but it doesn't hurt to start thinking about this now. What sort of availability of English language literature is there? How about self-importing (i.e. ordering off Amazon)? I have a degree in History, read a lot of more specialized literature on the subject, so Amazon & other on-line booksellers are absolutely an necessity for me. But I also read fiction as well. For reference, we're considering retiring to Quito (most of her family is there...)

Dear Damon,

Welcome to the Ecuador forum of expat.com....

I haven't bought a hardcover or paperback book in years since moving to Ecuador and South America.

It's easy to buy e-books via Amazon and read them with the free Kindle Cloud Reader.  Usually, any book I want is available via Kindle.

Many Expats who move around would do well to drop the habit of acquiring physical books and opt for the Kindle kind instead.

N.B. I have no financial interest in Amazon (except possibly for limited ETF investing in a basket of stocks) and do not receive compensation for the recommendation in this post.
